Australorps breed Thread

Gold in the neck of the Rooster? That is a cross at best. Do you have pictures you can post? What color egg does the hen lay.

A lot of Black chickens are sold as Australorps. Often a feed store will order in a couple hundred chicks en masse and then toss them into sales brooders without knowing what they are.

Black and white chick? Australorp....Often they are Black Sex links.

Obviously! I am amazed at the Black chicks that are sold at Hatcheries, Feed Stores, etc for Black Australorps. I am also amazed by the people that fall into that trap. If they just want egg layers no big deal but then they need to know they have mutts and post on the Black Chicken thread not the Black Australorp thread. It is really confusing to see Black chickens from A to Z being called Australorps.

A mutt is a mutt. I have owned a lot of mutt dogs and Loved them dearly, but I never told anyone I had a Rottweiler, Border Collie, etc., etc.

I am not a big fan of hatcheries but I can honestly relay this. Two friends of mind each bought Austraqlorp chicks from two different hatcheries earlier in this year. One got hatchery quality Australorps but they at least got the breed that was ordered.

The other got some black chickens. They do resemble the Australorp to a degree but I'm certain they are not. They might be JG's or JG/Australorp crosses.

It is now and will always be...CAVEAT EMPTOR.

Everyone starts somewhere, me included. I got my chicks from someone else who didnt want them who got them from the feed store. They may not be show quality but they are nice birds and one day hope to get an egg from them

My br was another hen I got from someone else - feedstore too. What these hens did do for me was get me into hatching and buying eggs from good breeders. So all well that ends well. Every outlet has it's place and I for one am glad for it.

Almost everyone of us got introduced to chickens through hatchery birds. Nothing wrong with that at all. If it weren't for the hatcherys, there would not be but a few dedicated show breeders and not very many chicks available to the general public......stan

Not knocking hatcheries...ours came from two different hatcheries ....almost 60 years ago. My point is, you might get almost anything from anyone...be it hatchery, farm stores or yes, even some highly thought of 'private breeders'.

**it happens.

Edited to say...no birds leave my place alive. Plenty have asked and I almost fell into that trap a few months back. The hassle it can bring down upon a breeder is simply not worth the few pennies. JUST MY HUMBLE OPINION.:old

Caveat emptor /ˌkæviːɑːt ˈɛmptɔr/ is Latin for "Let the buyer beware"[1]

Your flock looks like hatcheries birds now even since "60 years ago"...
