Australorps breed Thread

I have small hands. I would consider it a medium to medium + size. Not the size or my BR who is now a year and half. I was going to break it open but have decided to hope for the best when I need to use it for food. :weee

I have had 1 105 gram and 1 108 gram egg. They were both beautiful double yolked eggs. It is not uncommon to get eggs over 80 grams. All of those have large single yolks.

One of my Penedesencas--They have been laying for less than a month- laid a 61 gram egg. It is very nice!

How old is your hen? I ask because chickens are different from other animals, like cows, in that their gender changes with age, and not with birth/laying. Pullets become hens at one year. Just for clarification,
Zach

Exactly!!

My Australorps just turned 8 months old and they lay small eggs...Even though they are huge birds with big butts they still lay small eggs.
This made me think of this song I like big butts ..LOL
I hope everyone doesnt mind .

The eggs will probably get bigger as time goes on ..most do !

I always wondered when a pullet officially became a hen...
I guess that makes sense. one year old

I have been disappointed by my Australorps thus far as well. My one Red Star lays a big fat brown egg almost every day if I can find it (she likes to vary her nest spot a little as A free ranger), but the Australorps also six months old now are giving me nothing still. I realize it has been pretty cold but that doesn't seem to stop the Red Star she is a happy egg making machine. The Red Star is also the only chicken that can chase my Pyrenese dog around the pen like a mad velociraptor - beast mode chicken FTW. First few times I saw it I was like BOW (thinking dog don't you realize that is just a chicken?)

Lol, I love the 90s music.. But there were a few people requesting BA eggs from me but I can't send them small size eggs, that's embarrassing to me.. Greek people get embarrassed easily and want to send the best.

Don't worry about it! My Australorp hens lay large to extra large eggs but as pullets, they can embarrass anyone. My pullets just started laying at 7 months and their eggs look like large tan marbles.

But I know they will pick up in size over the next few months to be large and after their first molt, nothing to be ashamed of.

Oddly (in one sense), my Australorp/NN pullets start off with very respectable eggs, compared to their pure black parent.

The Red and Black Stars are great birds and no one can deny, they are among the best layers to be had...but they are generally spent by the end of their second year and have to be culled and replaced, with very few exceptions.

I have friends who will use nothing but the Stars and they are very happy with them. Perhaps, if I hadn't grown up with my Austrtalorps and Turken/NN's....the Stars would be living here too. One caveat...those belonging to my friend won't go out of sight of his hen houses and just rely mostly on what he feeds them.

Going to the Northeast Poultry Congress in January 18th for the 2nd time.. This is the Champions League of chickens with the same attitude of the Europe Champions League soccer/football Round of 16. Only the best will win..

I have a friend who knows Dan Castle and hoping Dan Castle will sell me BA eggs/chicks in the future.
