Got some good ones of the boys today. This is the same roo as the gawky boy I posted awhile back!! His uneven wattles always make me laugh.

This is our surprise roo that we had hoped was just a more developed hen. Then he got a nice set of tail feathers, lol. I wish I could get a good picture of the girls sheen. Soo pretty and green

But those wattles kind of remind me of a dog I had once

I'm considering purchasing some Australorps next year. A friend is possibly sending me White Rock and White Rock/Black Australorp cross hatching eggs next year, but I'd also really like to have purebred BAs.

What are some things you guys could tell me about this breed? What are things you like and don't like about them? What is a good roo to hen ratio?

They are good protective mothers. Not nearly as broody as my orpingtons but when I got my three baby Langshans, it was one of the Australorps that took them under wing and was in charge of protecting the new babies from the other hens pecks. They don't lay well in winter. Pretty smart birds. Not affectionate but they can be trained to allow you to pick them up and they will come when they think you have food for them (somewhat domestic). Never top nor bottom of the pecking order that I have seen. Good solid all around middle birds. Lay good sized eggs and very regularly. Excellent overall annual egg production even with the slow period in winter factored in.

Not nearly as large as a Langshan or Jersey Giant so you are getting more efficient feed to egg conversion with these BA's because they won't burn quite as many calories just walking around scrounging for bugs and moving about every day. I read it is possible to find "Black Orpingtons" that will lay better in the winter than BA's but this is not personally confirmed.

Informative, thanks. :) These guys do really sound like something I'd want to add. I plan on having BAs and WRs, so I'm not too worried about them not laying well in winter. Plus, I have ducks, too.

I am SO confused. I bought two supposed pullets at 8 weeks, that had no comb to speak of compared to their hatchmates that were obvious cockerals. I've heard some mature faster than others and see pictures of hens with pretty big combs and wattles so now that mine are growing some, I'm worried! I'll get pics and post soon for opinions. They're going on 12 weeks so I'm not sure if they've gone through their last juvenile molt. I'm not seeing rooster feathers yet, so they better be girls. Lol
Someone please reassure me!
