Australorps breed Thread

Hi Melabella, I fed pumpkin and just let the birds pick away at the insides and seeds, but I'm all out and can't find any. I keep ACV in their water at all times. So maybe that does help some. I've heard that garlic inhibits some parasites as well, but I hate using my good homegrown garlic as a wormer.

Thanks! I use unpasturized natural ACV only. It sets me back a few bucks, but well worth a little extra in cost, I think.

The natural wormers do not kill the worms. They do help the chickens resist them better. If they have worms, you need to treat it. Also, the ACV and Plain Yogurt will help them to recover from the stress of the Frontline.

Definitely worm them.

Most Definitely! I think I've decided on Valbazen. I can get it to go in drinking water (least favorite method for me) or drops to be taken orally. Some chickens drink a lot and some don't so it would be hard to gauge just how much if any each was taking in with the water soluble kind.

We use goat wormer..0.1cc.per bird .learned that from a buff orp breeder freind..But also switch up, wazine ect...

Took a pic of the australorp rooster today..had a chance for a beautiful balanced shot but one of the dirt bathing hens made a noise and he raised his head..

Here is a thing to try, give them Valvazen at night using a head lamp. pull gently on the wattle to have the chicken open it's mouth and carefully give the dose. I am going to try this next time.

Happy Chooks does this.

I personally woudl use Merricks over yougurt, Merricks is a Electrolyte pack that has probiotics and will give your birds a good kick to get them back going.

Quote: Use both!

It would not hurt them. I am also using B.O.B from Southland Organics. That has to be shipped to me but I can get Plain Yogurt from a lot of places. Make sure the yogurt has active cultures in it.

Save A Chick has a pro biotic version now too and my local TSC and Western Pet and Feed carry it.

Kefer has active probiotics, probably more so that yogurt. All I can find in the groc. store is flavored stuff with sugar. I'll need to head on over to the organic food store and see what they have. Merricks is available at Tractor Supply and I will use it as well. I have some vitamins/electrolites that came with my last shipment of chicks, you know that yellow crystal stuff, would that work?

I used Valbazen in a syringe (without needle). My DH held my hen and I slowly squirted it in the back of her mouth. Then I rubbed her neck for a short time to make sure she swallowed it all. Worked great. Day later I gave her water kefir (my DH makes it himself) My hen absolutely loves it and it has the highest quantity of "good bugs" to help both intestinal health as well as immune system. My hen would not eat my expensive store bought plain yogurt. Acted like the consistency bothered her. Shook her head aggressively and rubbed her beak off on the ramp. Then gave me the stink eye.
Seemed repulsed by it. I think I actually saw her shudder.
