Australorps breed Thread

Well, that depends on a lot of things.

Do you want hatching eggs? If you have the ability to hatch your own eggs, that opens up a larger possibility of a breeder mailing you eggs. You can receives eggs from anywhere, pop them in an incubator, and let nature do the rest. :) Pretty much anyone with a chicken and some bubble wrap can mail eggs!

Do you want day-old chicks? You narrow your search to people and hatcheries that will ship chicks. Not everyone does this, so check to make sure you know what you're getting!

Do you want started birds? Need pullets that are ready to go outside in the coop, but that are still young enough so that a move won't disrupt their laying cycle? Some farms will raise a bird to a certain age and then sell them. The price usually goes up by the week. You must also take into account biosecurity if you do this. Most people will ship young birds, but past a certain point, their health becomes an issue.

Do you want point-of-lay hens? Most people will not ship adult birds, so you'd have to find a local breeder.

Craigslist is a good place to look. Also, you can check on here for roosters that need a re-homing. :) Googling local Australorp breeders is a place to start, too!

Your best bet may be day-old chicks or hatching eggs to get what you want. :)

Good luck!

So just for fun is everyone still voting boy - 6 weeks old today.

It was actually kinda hard to get these because it kept getting too close and climbing up on my knee and the camera couldnt focus that close lol So much for broody reared chicks aren't as friendly :) It eats out of your hand, lets me pat it and comes running when it sees me :) Is sooooo not allowed to be a boy!!!!!!!!!!!

She is very cute!

They are quite the characters. Yesterday we had a snow storm whip through and they were under that trailer with the ducks, and a few buffs...not one would go to the coop. The coop is right next door mind you. I had to dig a new path and they all just walked inside single file. They are too funny. The buffs and ducks shouldn't be so surprised as this is their second (for some) and third (for others) winter.
