Australorps breed Thread

I out 10 under a smaller broody she did well. Oreo is huge so I won't mess with any bantam eggs or shells that crack easy.

Odd numbers work best.

one more question to all who have had broody Austalorps.
How many eggs can she sit in? She is my biggest hen.
How good of moms are they? I know each hen is different but curious on others experience.

Yes way. I don't know how much the hen weighs but a good guess would be somewhere around 5 pounds.

You have obviously seen the link..ask Kev about the number of peeps and the size of the hen...He has been a long respected member of this forum.

I think it has something to do with the hen turning them.

My black australorp hen from Murray mcMurray went broody and we let her try to hatch 3 eggs, one wasn't fertile, we got a boy and a girl. She was a great mom, she was separate from the other chickens the whole time.

Before we let her have eggs I had a baby robin that was abandoned she and another broody hen would fight over it, the robin just wanted food. We would put Robin under her and she would sit on her a lot, Robin actually got too hot.

How old was she? Did she ever go broody again?

I set Oreo on 13 eggs but she's not quite as smart as my OEG who like I said covered 10 easy and 9 hatched. Oreo hasn't figured out to tuff her feathers out , so I gently showed her she can put under wing . I also removed 2 eggs. She wasn't covering them all. I'm waiting for my husband to come home so we can subdivide coop again. I'm afraid to move her after her last attempt. She threw a fit and started breaking eggs. Don't want that again.
