Australorps breed Thread

With this selection of chiks i hope to have a steady supply of eggs. I am interested in knowing which breed oes the best overall. I think it will be the australorps counting summer and winter laying. the ones that I had in the past were the most productive I had. they would lay eggs through the heat of summer and the cold of winter when others would slow down or stop alltoghter. plus I think they are themost beautiful of all breeds , when the sun shines on them the purple and green colors are amazing.

Well that was an interesting adventure. I was going to take some photos of my two chicks now they are about 5 weeks old to see if you all agreed with my boy girl guesses but my camera scared them and when I opened their little run gate one bolted in with the big girls. Good news is they all either ignored it totally even though it tried to hide below a couple or jumped away from it not sure what it was I think. Nobody tried to peck it which is pretty much what they were like with pepper last year, they just pecked her mum. So I might try putting them all together under supervision sooner than I had planned.

As for the photos, I took the wrong lens for a confined space where the chicks insist on cuddling up on your leg instead of moving far enough off they are in focus. Sigh.

So, I'll just have to explain

Suspected hen, "blAckie" has a little stumpy tail and has lost all those white baby feathers and is now totally black. This one is the most nervous.

The other whose name is in Korean and I forget sigh, has only a very minimal start of a tail, is behind getting its wing feathers and still has the white fluffy feathers on its chest. This one is very friendly and likes its tummy scratched. This is my suspected roo. Oh and it gave an alarm trill while I was in there because this scary bug flew past. They both dropped and froze

To be honest both their combs look much the same, maybe, the seconds could be a fraction bigger but then it's been bigger all over since it hatched though the other is quickly catching up. Neither has a pink comb.

I have read the Australian australorps can be sexed by tail and feather growth, the girls being the quicker to get both. Is that the same with yours?

Feather growth does seem to work for some breeds. Heritage(Standard bred)RIRs and Australorps work like that usually.

It is still better to go by comb and wattles though.

maybe you can make some of your own ? This little beauty ..she is half Australorp & white Plymouth Rock

So one of my Bielefelder roosters decided to bring the Australorps into his harem, and this is the result so far at 4 weeks of age:






These are two of the four I hatched. I had wondered whether there would be any barring patterns, and there most definitely are. Two of the four are super, super sweet and friendly, and the other two are friendly but prefer to keep a bit more distance. I'm really curious to see how their feathering, body shape, disposition and egg laying evolves over time. I went forward with the hatch because although I love my Biels, their tolerance for the Arizona heat is extremely low and I'd like them to start laying eggs a lot sooner than they have. (My Biels are 8 mos old and I'm still waiting for the first eggs from most of them.)
