Yes, that is normal. My australorp is 9 weeks and still has some white feathers on her wings. The white feathers don't fall out, they just turn more black as they get older. That is what is happening to my australorp.

GOod to know. little stinkers are just really dirty though. Have to change food and water cause someone wants to poo in both. Every day! Several times a day! Grr!

Agreed. Messy (especially the water for our setup)....hoping to convert them over to nipples.

Half of that is correct. All the white tipped feathers will fall out and be replaced with black ones. They will go thru about 3 juvenile moults and loose the white tips if they are pure Australorps.

ya, I was gonna say something, but stopped myself. Once those feathers are hardpenned they're dead, they can't just change color, except maybe fade from the sun.

I'm new to chicken keeping but picked up a variety of different breeds from different breeders last week. 5 wheaten ameraucanas, 5 barred rock and 4 blue australorps. I just love the australorps. They are calm, gentle and very healthy - growing noticably quicker than my barred rocks (same age).

I am getting antsy to know the gender of my blues, particularly because these lovely birds are my favourite so far. I get the sense that it is hard to determine the gender of black australorps at a young age but are there any early indicators for the blues?

They are so cute. Apologies for the quality - I don't know how people get good pictures of chicks - they never stop moving!

I have three really light ones - varying degrees of grey - and one darker one (image 1). The darker one has white feathers on the lower part of its wings. They are mixed in with my barred rocks.
