So we let Penelope out for the first time, and what does she do? She lands on my head! This is apparently her MO.

...and she doesn't like to go back in. Hmmmmm. Hopefully she's feeling a little more settled. Pal is interested but unsure, especially when she's always sitting on a human head.

Note: Excuse my doo....I'd been fishing and hiking all day.

:clap
Careful, your fishing and hiking doo is gonna be doo-doo’d :gig

So this seems to be going well. At what point can we put them in the same enclosure? They've only actually touched once (when Pen landed on Pal's back). Usually Pen just kind of does her thing and Pal watches her. Ideas?

Killin me. I found a person on one of my FB groups with a pair of fantails, but he’s a couple hours away. I want them! :hit
only a couple of hours?
Meet in the middle?

That's unusual! Of my 18 birds, only the one I hand raised does this. (btw, his is a very dominant aggressive bird and I don't really want him to assert himself in this way. In future he is restricted to shoulder/hand only.)

Does she have a band? Do you know anything about her story?

Love the photo!
...'I meant to post the preceding earlier...now that I see the new pic with them together I'm going out on a limb with a WAG that Pal is F and Pen is male.

Pen (uh-oh...you think Pen is the M?) is most at home on my head. Pen was just on the floor watching Pal eat while I was typing and then flew to the top of my head again. Is this a behavior we should discourage? No band. The story is that Pen was on ground in a rain storm when the woman who rescued her/him went into a store. Pen was still there when she came out and followed her to the car and hopped in a cage. Pen loves sitting on my head or hand but doesn't like being patted like Pal does. Pen won't take treats from us yet either.

Please say "Hello" to Penelope.

Pal seems enamoured with Pen.. and likewise it would appear! Just so awsome!! :celebrate

Comparing their heads side by side in the new pic it appears that Pen has a more prominent forehead, rounded skull and larger beak cere - more typically male traits but not always... My guess could easily be wrong. You should start seeing some behaviors soon that will help.

Pals head looks more feminine to me.

So here is a little video from this afternoon. Pal is with the bands in the foreground and Pen is to the left.

Is Pen's behavior suggestive of mites? That sort of quick "pecking" at the feathers--I've never seen Pal do that.

When would it be okay to put them in the same enclosure? I've not seen any aggression between the two of them at all.

Thanks!

It doesn't suggest mites to me. To me seems like preening while still wanting to keep track of surroundings. You can check the feathers up close to see mites if you are concerned.

I don't see why you shouldn't put them together if you have some time to watch them at first. Hope you are having twice the fun now.

Thanks!

sorry, answer got embedded in guote:idunno
