Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

It's hard to tell from the angle of the pictures, but here is what I see:

Positives on the pullet - leg color, tight wing carriage, nice head
Negatives - lacing looks messy over the wings.

I can't see much more of body shape from the pictures.

It's really hard to evaluate young cockerels. They need time to fill in.

Cockerel Positives - leg color
Cockerel Negatives - tail fluff, tail angle, flat chest, if that's white at the end of his tail feather

Thanks! On the cockerel there is no white on the end of the tail feathers and I think my dominant SLW roo has been yanking this guys tail feathers out. The tail used to be much fuller and that fluff wasn't visible until feathers started disappearing.

He may still be going through his juvenile molt. Mine can be really slow in molting out, especially their wing feathers. Like I said before, it's really hard to judge cockerels at a young age. They fill in so much more up to a year to 18 months.

I'm certainly no expert, but I'll give it a shot.

Positives - nice rounded breast, leg color

Negatives - lacing looks incomplete, loose feathering, low wing carriage (at least in the picture) and overall size looks small. (unless it's a bantam)

Is it just the picture, or does this bird have a beard? If so, it may be a cross.
Thank you. Yes, I thought she was small and wasn't sure about her being a bantam, poor nutrition or both. I bought her as a rescue case of undetermined age. Reportedly hatched around 4/24 but so very small for that age. I've had her in quarenteen for 5 weeks with 2 others sympathy cases. There were 3 full size barnies on the property and the rooster was reported killed by a predator. I don't think she has a beard but cross is not out of the question.

Today I found bloody poop and now wonder if that explains the low wing carriage. I may live to regret this.

Have you wormed her yet? If not I would get some safeguard in her and also get some corid in the water incase she has coccidiosis. I just wormed mine because the hen pooped right in front of me and there were live worms moving in it. Safeguard administered orally for 5 days and will repeat that shortly. Good luck with her, hopefully you won't regret it.

Get some Corid in her (and anyone living with her) water ASAP. Coccidiosis is very treatable if caught early. Left untreated, they can die quickly.

Hello, all!

Earlier this year I got some BVs (Is that the short term? It's what I use..) that I've got from a local small-scale hatchery. I'm over in East Ottawa. Mine are hopefully all girls, though I think I've got a boy in the mix. They're all around 17weeks, so I guess I should have noticed a proper boy by now. I might be interested in trading birds down the road for another hen if anyone wants to trade or whatnot.

I've no intentions on improving or preserving the breed on my own farm, really I just like the nice patterns & eggs. But if I can help someone else, somewhere down the road, please let me know.

(Also, as a disclaimer: I'm friendly & LOVE stories of people's farms & goals. However, please don't just PM me saying "cn i have ur birds?" I'm looking for potential friendships & being able to help the breed; not just giving away stuff simply cause it's there. Not trying to sound snarky, just I've gotten far too many off messages over birds. So hoping that helps, thank you kindly!)

Here are some pics of my 8 week old Blue Laced Red Barnevelders from a famous breeder in Ohio. Originally I had eight but my friends stole(took by force) 5 of them when they were 2 weeks old because they were so pretty. Out of the 3 I have left, 2 definitely are cockerels and I am worried about the 3rd because it has grown wattles in the last 2-3 days. Till then, I was thinking it was a pullet because of different color but just found out that they had a blue laced rooster in their pen along with a buff(splash) rooster, so Baby Bop is possibly a Black laced and not Blue Laced.

Experts, I need your help in determining A)Quality and B) gender of the dark one (I named her Baby Bop because I thought she was a pullet). If there is no pullet in there, they will all be available for re-homing.
