Barred Rock rooster or hen???

Being a NewYorker, I am always skeptical. How does one know if the chicken they get back, is actually the birds you dropped off for processing.
hmmmm........i never thought of that....but do you think they have a bunch of birds hanging around to just hand out to people???

I'm sorry you were taken by an unethical seller. THe next time you buy off of Craigslist, you might want to take a picture of the birds, post them here and get opinions, then buy them. I've seen some people do that, and avoid some pretty bum deals that way.

BTW none of those birds are even slightly female.

Also, as a note on the processing, we take our turkeys and chickens to a local processing business. They just charge us like 3 dollars, we give them the bird, and get handed back this beautiful prepared product. It's a really good deal. Perhaps you could Google search for one in your area.
i was taken all the way around on this deal!.....the guy i got them from was from out of town...i never saw the birds till i met him 25 minutes from where i live...when he showed me them, i said the 2 lighter ones looked like roos...he started right then saying you can only be 99% sure of what you get...oh well...so much for getting some barred rocks!

I've been in Idaho so long that I forgot how things work on the East Coast (lived in DC 10 years myself). Over here, if you'd like to watch them process your bird, you can. Some of the locals lean on the counter and chat with the guy until he turns on the de-feathering machine, which is pretty loud. That, and it would be a pretty nifty trick if they could come up with 10 turkeys at the exact weight and color as the ones we drop off, all in an hour. They're a family owned place, not a large corporate factory, so their resources for trickery are pretty limited.

The best part about our processor is that they give you more of the organs than what you'd get at the store. They toss in the lungs and tail as well as the usuals, which we throw into a pot and cook with the bones to make a really good turkey-neck stew. It's divine!

I am sure Pele, thanks for the response!

Since I read your post I have been looking for a processor here if I ever come to that decision. I am a neophyte only 15 weeks into my small little flocks development. Creeping towards eggs, and can't wait!

Thanks again!

My beloved daughter wanted some silkies for her daughter to raise.. OK, The PACKING NOODLES were Barred Rock roosters!!! Which she foisted off on me. ;-) I have a sneaking suspicion that all are roosters ... but one actually looks like it may be a hen.. At what point is it so obvious that any idiot ( namely me) could tell??? They are about 6 weeks old ?? give or take a few days.
Thanks!

Having a lot of problems downloading a picture !! but wondering if these - if the picture shows up are roosters?

Yep, roosters. (I looked at your profile to see your pics) Try using the icon at the top of the reply box that has a little landscape in it to imbed them on this thread.

I got my first BRs this year. I have 4 that are 3 weeks old and this one is not like the others. After reading some of the threads on here I'm pretty sure it is a roo but not 100%.
