Bertha has her chicks in the corner ready to sit on - but oh no????
She counts them and then she looks - ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !!!! What are you doing up there Mable???? GET DOWN NOW BEFORE YOU BREAK YOUR NECK!!!!!
Nugget looks up - mummy can she really DO THAT??!!!! NO Bertha shouts GET DOWN CHILD!!!!
Betty climbs up and joins Mable -look its fun!!!!!
No it is NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Time for bed NOW - !!!!!!!!!!!!! She pulls them roughly down off the roost and sits on them!!!!!!

that last picture cracks me up. The caption should read, "Get over here right now. I WILL sit on you whether you like it or not!!!! I brought you into this world and it's my RIGHT to sit on you! Now get your butts over here!"
Yeap Bertha is not letting them grow up any time soon!!!!!
Oesdog - still brooding !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Told you !!!!!!!! Though I do think that the chicks are making a bid for freedom now. They want to copy the big girl hens and roost but Bertha insists on sitting it is really funny to watch her trying to get them all back in her prefered corner!!!!! Sure is funny to see her trying to put all those big babies under her!!!!!!!! When you look at Mable standing on the perch next to Caroline (the white speckled adult hen) there isn;t much size difference now. I am expecting an egg from Mable soon!!!!!!!!
must count the weeks right - Mable , Nugget and Duck were hatched on 1st June and Betty on 2nd June ( Betty is a little smaller than the other three but is doing fine.) - I wonder if your girl will sit as long???? It is rather odd isn;t it!!!! Bertha has not even wanted to start laying again at all!!!!!!!
Well all good things must come to an end. Lola the broody left her "chicks". Yep, she hopped up on the shelf and slept with the other grown-ups while the chicks huddled in their corner on the floor and slept peacefully. She did hang out with them all day free ranging but again last night she slept without them. So, three months to the day....wow!!!
Oh well. This goes down in my personal history as the one to beat, although I doubt this will ever happen again.

Ahhhh - so sorry to hear that. - What about Bertha - how do you want me to record this now? Does she have to sit on ALL the chicks???? At the moment she is gathering them up and squashing them in a heap in the corner but they are starting to rebel and want to roost. Bertha has no intention to Roost at all!!! So well what I am saying is do you want it to be up until the last chick roosts and Bertha sleeps with the adult hens again on the roosting bar? Or is it going to be when she finally alows the first chick to sleep away from her????
Bertha is still not eating properly - still doing the old throw all the nice treats on the ground for the chicks. I can;t even get her to eat bread???? She always throws it to the chicks. But I don;t think it will be too much longer before she gives up entirely I mean she can;t keep yanking the poor chicks down off the roost so she can squish them can she????
So what is the record brood????(does anyone know???) I will have to count the weeks for Bertha I will be very surprised if it goes another week after the babies have figured out the roost bar??? Poor Bertha is sooo upset about that she nearly has a fit and yanks their feet until they fall off! It is incredible to watch -
Anyhow sad your girl gave up - 12 weeks is a good long time better than most!!!! I really don;t know what to do about Bertha - should I just let her get on with it?? We tried forcing her to give the babies up before and she cried and made the most dreadful whinning sobbing sound for three days I couldn;t bare it so I gave them back to her? I felt such a lady dog!!!!!! Anyhow she was out in the yard today and the chicks are all following her everywhere - only they are near her size now?
Let me know what way you want this counted? I think Mable will spend the night on the perch soon if Bertha lets her stay there?

That is soooo funny - you can almost hear her yelling that can;t you. It was the look on her face when she realised she only had 3 chicks under her butt not 4? SHe nearly had a fit when she saw Mable on the roost!!!!! Mable looks like a kid cought climbing that old tree mum said not to !!!!!!!
