wow thats a beautiful flock !!! I hope caroline starts doing better I wonder why your girls are molting so hard mine have never done it that hard although this is their first molt. Those brothers sure are great looking. I can't wait to get my first blue chicks in a few weeks ! Those blue ameraucana girls are too beautiful AHHHHHHHH I NEED SOME and also Those RIR girls !!!!

What a beautiful flock you have! I love your pictures! I have heard mentioned many times about the difference between hatchery RIR and others, but have never seen them side by side for comparison. From you pictures (hopefully it isn't just the light) I can see a significant difference in them. I now know what BYC'ers are talking about when they say they can tell a specific bird is a hatchery RIR. Thank you for posting these. I love learning new things!

Thanks so much. In that last set of pics, the 5th one down of the RIR is my runty girl, Rosemary. The color difference you see is really there. I still have Reba, who is in another pic, but lost Ruby this year to internal laying. Rosemary has no middle toenails and when she was laying, laid a cream colored small to med sized egg, not brown. She hasn't laid in months (she's almost 3) and I fear she's laying internally since she used to be a great layer. Rosemary is pretty typical, color-wise, of most of the hatchery RIRs I've seen. I'm glad I do own some of the better quality ones because they are just a treat to watch. You really should get some!

I don't know what kind it is off hand, but it's free and has never been used! My DH is very supportive and really likes having chickens. Last week he told me about his plans to expand the coop and double the run! This is very selfless because our coop is also his shed (tool shed, building shed, etc.). About 1/3 of it is currently our coop and now he thinks that 1/2 of it should be the coop. So, now I just need to narrow my list down. I love the coloring of your RIR's. Did you hatch them yourself?

Yes, I did hatch these myself, this year and last year. I had one girl I sold because she was so beautiful, I felt she should be reproduced and I didn't have a RIR rooster. I missed seeing her around, so got more eggs this year. They all came from Bama Chicken (Julie).
