Best egg layer?!?

We vote LEGHORNS, and since we love eggs (hence our name 3D) added 3 Khaki Campbell ducks who lay every day without fail! Duck eggs are awesome to eat and bake with.

Where could I get frizzle polish chicks from?
I don’t know, you can try searching for hatching eggs and hatcheries, ask the Polish Thread here maybe. They are a fun looking chicken… but Polish are going to lay very low numbers of eggs and smaller eggs compared to Leghorns. The Polish type birds (top hat breeds) have not been improved via selection for egg production or meat or even dual purpose… they are mostly ornamental, no reason they could not be improved though. They are a fun breed, beautiful breed and I have had them in the past.

Frizzle aka Caffie

Frizzle bred to Frizzle creates genetic issues as well, it is considered irresponsible to do so. A Frizzle is crossed with a non-Frizzle to produce 50% normal and 50% Frizzle chicks. I have found Cochin Frizzles offered by hatcheries, they always seem to be bantams. You could create your own by choosing the Polish you want, ordering those and ordering Frizzle Cochin then crossbreeding, selection and back breeding until you have Standard sized birds with Polish traits and frizzle feathers. You could also breed Frizzle Leghorns this way.

If you absolutely have to have maximum production on minimum feed then commercial-strain White Leghorns are, hands-down, the specialists in that area.

Then there are the Leghorn-adjacent breeds like California White, Ideal 236, etc.

And then the commercial-strain brown layers, mostly forms of red sexlinks. Note that not all sexlinks are commercial-strain production birds.

Hello!!

I’m wondering what the best egg layer breed is. We have cut our flock down a lot and the chickens we have are older, so we want to add young birds this spring!! I am looking for one that lays lots of eggs and is hardy!! Thank you for any advice!!!
My australorps and ancona kept laying through the winter. My others took a break for a few weeks but I do not add artificial light. I didn't consider that aspect when I selected my first flock and still needed eggs in winter months. 🙂

If you're looking for production, it's hard to beat the old standby, Hyline 36.
