BEWARE who you hire to watch your flock & your other animals

Wow that's awful, especially by someone you knew! So sorry that you had to find out that this person was irresponsible in this manner.

I had my elderly neighbors chicken sit and they showed up with notepad in hand ready to take down directions. I tried to make it easy as possible on them (full feeder, full waterer) so they basically had to open and close up the coop and pick up eggs. Dogs I always send to a boarding kennel - I just feel better having an entire staff keeping an eye on them.

I have had college and high school kids take care of my charges. Most I vetted as worked with them through 4H or as lab assistants involving animals touchier than chickens. All were allowed to take care of things while I was present for training. No just telling or writing down instructions. I have close to 50 pens at the least so they get broken in. Only one that proved problematic had chickens of its own and opted to ignore my regimen while I was gone. That change resulted in a loss of several birds. Since, a neighbor is provided as a contact in case troubles encountered.

I always leave mine with my neighbors- neighbors who I have seen their flock and know that my pets will be safe with them.
You can buy automatic waterers for the cats, you fill it full before you leave and there are some big ones out there. You can do the same with feeders. I will be praying for your cat!
I have a 5 gallon waterer in my basement for 5 cats, I fill it MAYBE once a month...

So sorry you had this happen to your animals. I sincerely hope everyone recovers.
