What did you think of the Christmas Bird Count? I almost joined, but it seemed so confusing. How did it work out for you?

It went well. The national park organizes it in our area and we went with small teams to survey different ecosystems from the highlands to the prairies and the salt marshes. The best thing to do is to join an organized local CBC and tag along with folks who have already done it.

Every year is different, depending on weather and where you go, but often there are lots of birds (and a few experts along, so you see things that you otherwise might miss ).

What a beautiful variety! What is one of your personal favorites?
This thread is hard to find, for some reasons the keywords never add up. I'll try adding a few more tags and hope that helps!

My favourites are probably... the red breasted nuthatches, bushtits and tanagers!

Laugh all you want, I think I just saw my first ever starling. Yeah, I've never seen one before! I tried to get a picture... but it didn't turn out well. I'm in a car. (Not driving, lol)

Yesterday morning I also saw my first bald eagle!!! I was so excited! Although they fly through here at this time evey year, I'd never seen one!

Awesome! Are they just passing through or will they stay around your area for a while?

I just saw my new record (or at least close to it) of birds in my yard in a ten minute checklist! 16 species, 97 individuals! The coolest were two crows, a raven, four Red-breasted Nuthatches, and three Red-winged Blackbirds.
