Black oil Sunflower Seeds, In the Shell or out? How much and how often

*Euery post I've seen regarding oyster shell and/or grit so far has beem with it offered in a dish or feeder of some sort. It kinda gets lost in the dirt otherwise. Oyster shell is pricey so you don't want that lost.

I tried mixing BOSS in with our girls' feed and they spent more time billing out the feed to get the BOSS leaving the feed on the ground...

I just started to feed my girls the BOSS at first they kinda walked around it not sure what it was - than all it took was one brave girl to give it a try - now they come running for it. they get a few handfuls every morning. mine dont free range either - so I guess I better get them some grit now.
I also give some of the BOSS to the ducks they dont eat them as fast as the chickens do.

Sunflower seeds w/o shells are over 50% oil, so they have a lot of calories . . .

Without shells, they'd have about twice as many calories as the hens' commercial feed, ounce for ounce.

I mix a bag of oilers with a bag of scratch and a bag of wildbird seed. Cuts down on the amount of corn in their treats. I have 15 standards and give them about 1/2 a coffee can in the morning. I throw it in the shavings in the coop and it keeps them busy for a couple of hours. They eat the BOSS first and then go after everything else.

So as long as I give them grit, the shells won't cause a crop problem? I give with shells, but that is something I've worried about. Without shells is so much more expensive.
