BLRW joke - now 11 weeks old, is it a boy??! (answer in post #82)

Saddle feathers grow in at the tail, hackle feathers are the neck feathers.

I'm not convinced yet that you have a boy there. When my boys saddle feathers came in, they started further back by the tail and curved downward. And they all had curved tail feathers before the saddle feathers came in. I don't see any of that in this bird.

I think it may just be normal feathering in along the back. At this age, they are still filling in. It still looks like a pullet to me. I wouldn't be rehoming this bird until you're absolutely sure. (like if it crows)

OK thank you new2chooks... I'm still learning so much every day, every little bit of info helps!

I'll hold on to her for now

I guess I'm in the minority, but I still say those are saddle feathers.

My chicks are almost 12 wks old, and all the boys have their saddle feathers starting in like that.

This is why I'm making such a fuss about it...

I have another BLRW roo that is 3 weeks older and this is exactly how his orange saddle feathers started coming in (same place, same shape and color...) about a month ago...

What's BLRW? W = Wyandotte, right? It has a small, pullet-like rosecomb (as we call it here, our pure bred Wyandottes have a different Standard for Show Quality birds).....I'd say pullet with some very interesting colouring. I agree about the throwback gene, maybe the breeder's stock is a little inbred? Don't quote me tho.....

Unless this chick got accidently penned with other chick stock before sale? Or an egg in the incubators?

If that's a cockerel....you should know soon enough when it starts crowing.....

I'm interested to know what the comb and wattles looked like on your other bird when the saddle feathers came in?

He already had a big red comb & wattles when the saddle feathers came in, but he is a properly-marked BLRW so for sure from different parents!

I just took these today, sorry for the bad quality but it was dark in the coop.

Is that a jaunty feather poking out of her tail?

Scarlet turned 10 weeks old earlier this week...
