Blue Andalusian thread!

I've had problems from time to time with mites on some of my boys... not in the usual places. Check over his entire body. Also, consider the weather. These are a Mediterranean breed and though I know California is quite warm, it isn't warm enough in March/April, not enough warm light hours! I have the same issues when its early in the year. They definitely like the warmth. So, if its not mites and they're not sick, give them a little more time. And more time out in the sun if you can.
 
I'm excited to have finally found a Blue Andalusian thread! I have two hens, I think. They are so beautiful and I can't wait to see them full grown!
 
I can tell that, I have been looking on for a couple of days to see some action! Yes, they are eating strawberries. They love them! I am assuming you have some blues...since you subscribe to this thread. How do you like them, do have any advice for raising them, or entertaining them?

I have been trying to acquire andalusians for about 4 months. Living in Hawaii has its drawbacks. I actually did come across 4 hatchery andalusian pullets locally. I picked them up. Only one has even a hint of lacing. That is to be expected from hatchery stock I suppose. Still working on getting really nice ones.
One think I have noticed about these hatchery andalusians. They lay EGGS!!! I mean rarely even take a day off. I have one pullet that has only missed one day in 4 weeks! Egg laying machine. lol
 
I have a Blue Andalusian rooster from McMurray hatchery, and he's very handsome. But, with living in a colder area, I don't think his comb will fair too well. Also, he's quite high strung and protective of his "girls", non of which are Blue Andalusians. He challenges me a lot (fluffing out his hackle feathers), but I'm usually able to keep him at bay by pinning him to the ground like another rooster would do. Whenever I'm out there with the chickens, he'll usually crow every minute to couple minutes, as he obviously sees me as a "threat".
I hatched out some of his chicks via Red Star hens and an EE hen. The one from the EE turned out blue with little muffs! The ones from the Red Stars are white and white with black spots. He's has excellent coverage, as most of the eggs are fertile, and quite a few of the hens have "wear marks".

But, I'm probably going to have to find him another home, simply because I don't want a rooster with such a large comb and wattles. He wouldn't make a very good meat bird, as he's very tall and skinny. Do you think someone would want him for breeding? I thought I'd first check on BYC to see if there's anyone in the NY area that might be interested. There's no rush, as the replacement roosters that I'm growing out are only 5 wks old, but I thought I'd start looking.



 
I'm so happy! I have had Andalusians for the past two years, but nothing like these beauties that I picked up not too long ago! Big, beautiful, and friendly!
