I have never personally used tethers but from my understanding they aren't bad for the bird as long as they arent on them too long, so a couple hours wouldnt be bad. Only thing that I would be afraid of would be predators.
How safe is it to use tethers. In other words if I wanted to take a few birds that I plan to show that have been in conditioning pens and let them out for a couple hours on a tether, would I be asking for trouble?

Here is the head that ended up on some of our heritage birds.........not quite this extreme, but Asils were a foundation stock as noted here.

Asil.... who needs cortizone cream for that face!

I agree that their tight feathering and frame and even their colors are beautiful. Their feet are so large. We would call them a Brown Bagger in my house.

Fascinating! I never thought to keep rooster like you would goats. What I want to know is why their breasts are bare so often.

Yea I would be out there inside of a fenced yard with them along with my dogs. They are all much bigger then any hawks so it would just be a few 4 legged animals that I would have to watch for.

I read an article one time where a cocker stated that the hawks don't mess with his game cocks. They're too mean for that. I've seen a farm of these birds and they lived on tethers. Their entire area was fenced, probably for ground predators, and they each had their own little house they could get into or onto. I only saw one tether up close and its not a string as I may have imagined, I think the part that goes around their leg is leather and there is something on the lead that keeps it from getting tangled.

I am happy to learn that Silkies are good for something. It is a shame you would have to feed them an entire year and only use them for half.

These Orientals have a way about them that grows on you. They are in a class all of their own. They are especially impressive to be around in person.

If these Catalanas survive quarantine, then my start with them will be official. These are the first genuine authentic Catalanas that I have seen in person.

So interesting! A while back there was discussion about the possibility of improving Russian Orloff size with Malays on the RO thread, I think the idea was that it would not really harm type and is thought to have been a foundation breed of the RO. The more research I did the more I knew that was a down-the-road breed for me - I love them but I have learning to do before I delve into a breed in need of really expert eyes, deep understanding of breeding for specific traits which may or may not be connected genetically, and time to devote to them.
