Shelleyb1969 .... you have such nice birds. I really like your picture of the RIR pullet. And, your Barred Hollands are the first I have seen. I really like the barred birds.

Germaine, Very nice pictures there! Those Foleys do a fine job, that is for sure!

Thanks to all of you for sharing your pictures. I love pictures!

Great Pictures everyone. I have a bottle of Nitro glycern by my computer now. So when I see a true honest to goodness hatchery chicken being passed on for a old fashion Heritage one I just put one under my tounge and the pain goes away.

We have done a great job teaching the folks out there the difference. We can only help a few people get what they want and thats all we can do. We will all work to keep the rare breeds alive and salvage the genes the best we can for the future generations.

Those Silver Laced Whyandottes from Ky are simply some of the best large fowl in America today. I just love thier color and they have great oval wyandotte type. They are master breeders and the proof is not in thier wins but with the BIRDS THEY SHARE TO THIER FRIENDS. You are so lucky to have such great large fowl at your homes.

keep the pictures coming. bob

Oh no, Jenjscott!
I've got one "Sandhill" Barred Holland hen -- so I'm looking to increase the flock, too.

Kathy... How come you get all the bricks, huh? Good heavens look at the thickness of his legs! Handsome boy. However the bird in the background makes the picture all wrong so go ahead and ship it out here so it doesn't muddy up anymore pictures. I will be happy to help you out.

Good morning y'all

I need some "expert" advise. I have (from a breeder in Ohio) a flock of Columbian Plymouth Rocks Large Fowl that I am beginning to work with. I have 4 cockerels (2 of which I will be keeping) and 7 pullets. Of the 7 pullets, 6 are about the same size, all thriving, although each has her own set of qualities/issues which will need to be either carried on or improved upon. However, my 7th pullet is definitely different. She is probably a 1/3 smaller than the other 6, legs are shorter, her head looks like a golf ball set upon the top of her neck and her eyes are very narrow and weak looking. Hoping not to offend anyone here, so please forgive me, but I would liken her appearance to that of a human child suffering from Downs Syndrome.

Here are 2 pictures

I know that she is certainly not one to keep for breeding purposes, but my question is:

How does this occur? Is it a result of line breeding and if so, what do I do in the long term to avoid this? Can she live a decent quality of life if she is just placed into a laying flock or a flock with no rooster? She is simply a little sweetheart, but I have no idea what to do for her. I currently have her separated from the others as she appeared to have been getting trampled on

Y'all that have been doing this for a while, is this an unusual thing? Something that occurs that we "neophytes" need to be on the watch for? And of course what suggestions would you give on how to avoid this down the road?

Thanks much!!!

Scott
