Nice Pics Don!

That lady would be me, and I've been trying !!!!! I have no idea how a gold or silver came out......that must be something in the far ancestry, but the blue and black have to be a sneak visit from Blue, my Ameraucana rooster in the next coop over. Not sure how or when they had their fling, but sadly, I haven't been able to repeat it. I want some too!!! My original "mix" was a Brabanter rooster with a Splash Ameraucana, and one thing to note for those who are trying to develop a blue, is that the crest seems to be carried by the girls, as the 1st breeding did not produce a crested bird, while Don's surprises did.

Thanks for the input! Sorry you're having trouble getting the blues to come out right, but it's really interesting that only the breedings that used brabanter hens turned up chicks with crests. I read that crests were always dominant, so I would've figured crests would show as long as one parent was crested. Interesting that it didn't turn out that way. What did you end up with when you tried to repeat the process with the Ameraucana rooster?

I would gladly help you try to repeat the blue brabanter formula, but my brabanters are only 8 weeks old at the moment. Maybe I can find a blue Ameraucana rooster when they're older and try to get some blues as well. Of course, it's entirely possible that you'll have the blue formula pinned down by then. What types of brabanters did you use when you tried: cream or gold? I have gold, so I'm wondering if it makes a difference either way?

I haven't had any hatch again from that combo....unless the new mamma has some hiding under her.
I have only Cream Brabanters, which is why I was totally befuddled as to why or how Don came out with a gold and a silver! The europeans have Silver, but they aren't in this country, so I imagine their is either a silver Spitzhauben or Polish in the ancestry when the Brabanters were "rebuilt" I would think they used Spitzes to tame the Polish crest.

Sorry you're not having good luck with the blues. On the plus side, if you ever manage to hatch out another one, it'll feel like winning the lotter.

Missy is very pretty! I have some that are developing quite nicely, but I also have a couple that have a bit of a swept back crest like a Polish, though not nearly as large. I also have a couple with no crests as well. I agree that the silver is probably a throwback to Spitz ancestry, but it would be a nice color to get for brabanters in America. I wonder if I could even get blues from using a gold spangled bird? I know that there's black in there somewhere because of the spangling, but shouldn't a spangled bird crossed with a blue bird still produce a bird with some kind of pattern and not a solid colored bird? I'm a newbie at chicken color genetics, so I really have no idea how a lot of this works.

Iwould think the lacing would be desirable on a blue in the blue/black/splash group. From the crosses I have, and from the look of Don's, the actual spangling doesn't appear, at least first generation.

That's interesting about the spangling, too. I forgot completely that blues are supposed to be laced

; the only blue I have at the moment is my bantam cochin, and she's actually lavender, so she doesn't have any lacing.

I posted a few pages back about my brabanters goofy wings. Her wings are still goofy, but I also have discovered she has a distinct lack of feathers on her shoulder neck and a bit under her wing.
Skins in great shape, no pecking going on, it's not new, but with longer feathers growing over the area I didn't notice it was still bare.
Tiki was a runt.
It looks like the feathers are still in the sheaths and just not able to get loose.
any thoughts or ideas? I'm tempted to soak her in some warm water.
