Oh my goodness, all beautiful pictures. I really think this the prettiest breed (I am partial to full-figured birds).

I am surprised to hear that the standard brahmas lay only medium-large eggs, because my two bantam buff brahmas (cutest things in the world!) lay eggs that are large for a bantam. In fact, they lay the same size as the egg as my standard sized hamburg hen lays. Based on that, I thought standard brahma eggs would be BIG. Also funny that they are so slow to mature. My bantam brahmas matured at about the same rate as my EE bantams.

I'm getting the sense that bantam brahma is not just a small version of standard brahma.

At any rate, I am glad to hear that hatchery brahmas lay pretty well, and maybe are not as huge as the "show quality" brahmas I have seen.

While I have no brahmas at the moment (I'm on the list from a breeder for some) the ones I had were quite a bit bigger than my other birds. The hatchery brahmas will tend to be a bit smaller, closer to the size of wyandottes and others. They are not known for their great laying, and their eggs are small, considering the size of the birds they come out of. My best layers that were not specifically egg-layers are the wyandottes. I have a six year old hen that still gets in the nest box every once in a while, and she was laying fairly well into her fourth year. The brahmas are true eye candy, though, which is why I love them. And they are very huggable! I love the large fowl for that!

Cheryl, I just about passed out at those pictures! They are truly spectacular! Dare I hope to see any of yours at Crossroads?

The Crossroads of America Show in October in Indianapolis. It's looking to be the biggest poultry show ever - I think they are hoping for over 14,000 birds! Here's the website:

Put the volume down before you click on it - they have VERY loud music playing!

It's a three day show - I can hardly stand the wait! Maybe if your hatching goes well, I could help you out by taking some of those babies off your hands!

LOL! There is a peacock at the ranch where I keep my breeders,(my neighbors complained about the roos so about 6 months ago I had to find a place where I could keep them but still be close-it's working out wonderfully, thank goodness) he molted and they dropped down into my pens
