I have Barred Rocks, EE and Buff Brahmas. They are pretty dang close to the same size. I cant answer on the laying part as my girls just turned 18 weeks and have not started laying yet. Here is a picture of all of my girls together for size reference.

Wow! What a beautiful flock! I love the mix of buff, red, and barred. Very colorful.

You know, as far as size, I once saw a couple of brahma hens in a poultry show that were ENORMOUS. The largest one looked to be at least twice the size of my wyandotte hen. Very fat. But then I have read elsewhere that they are usually not much bigger than rocks and wyandottes, so it is interesting to hear from you.

Would love to hear from others. Are your standard sized brahma hens a lot bigger than rocks, or pretty similar? How well do they lay?

Brahmas typically are 8-10 lbs like most large breeds - they just look bigger cause of the fluff. They CAN however reach 15 lbs. Hatchery brahmas tend to lay pretty well. Breeder/show stock not so much, which is typical of many breeds. I have had breeder quality birds that laid typically 3 eggs a week. Also hatchery stock that laid 5-6 a week. however for their size, they don't lay a really big egg like you'd think. they typically only lay an egg about medium to large. not the jumbo sized ones like RIR can lay.

Also the thing with brahmas are they are slow to mature - they can take up to 18-20 months to be fully grown to "peak" size - so do not make a cost effective meat bird compared to most other breeds (like rocks and wyandottes) that mature and 'peak' at about 8-10 months old.

Very pretty!! Mine are hatchery too, buffs and light, they lay good and have the nicest personality. But your right they do take a while to mature.

I think you will notice that brahmas are slow to develop. When your others stop growing, the brahmas will continue to grow. When the flock is a year old the brahmas will be larger.

THANKS!! I love them, they are so sweet, they let me snuggle them....

Just starting to incubate some eggs myself, hopefully hatching next month
