Hey Don, were you Bluebird? If it is you, I never knew your real name, I always called you BB! I have wondered where you were! There is a new Brahma club site now. Its kind of slow though. You can post a question there and not get a response for days or ever at all. Good to see you are still around. I'm hoping to be at Indiana in 2011. I won't be at Frankenmuth this year though. How are your buffs? I know you were working toward Crossroads 2011. I got a coulpe of good males from Greg.(and two females) The tails of my buffs have dramatically improved as a result. I hatched close to a hundred chicks this spring. I've culled down to around 65 young birds now, and still have my 13 adult breeders. I always enjoyed/appreciated your insight on the buffs and lights!

Tim63: all my chickens did very well last winter, and were even outside at -35F, no frostbite or losses to the cold.
I like the LF Light Brahmas, though I have yet to get a broody I have hatched many of them in my incubator, with 1 Light Brahma rooster and 34 assorted hens, our fertility was 97.3%, so I think I have a winner.

1st to hatch today

Tim, I plan on being at Columbus at the Ohio National in November. I have been trying to raise a few Buff for Indiana next year. I have plenty of hens but would like to see if I can raise a good male for the national next year. I wish you luck at the fall shows and am sure the birds from Greg are nice.

Thanks Don! and good luck to you this fall. Hope to finally get to meet you at indy next year.

PT, 97.3%! Sounds like you do have a winner.

I put this question in the Delaware forum by mistake... and a few people have told me this is normal, but I just want to be sure... my 2 LB chicks are waaaaay smaller than their SLW and Del siblings. (all are 2 weeks old) They seem healthy-- great foragers and everything and mama is taking great care of everybody... but look at the difference! This SLW hatched only 1 day before the LB! All the SLWs are the same size, and the 2 LBs I have are the same size, so I just grabbed one of each for size reference...

Yes, I'm sure. They were both the size of the Delawares when I picked them up as day-olds. I know the breeder and I've seen her breeding pens-- she only has standards, and they're big birds!

It is odd that the "light Brahma" is half the size of the SLW(silver laced wyandotte?). I only raise bantams, so I'm certainly not an authority. Bantam Brahmas are quite a bit larger than a lot of other bantams. Are you sure they are the same age? Why don't you call the breeder and see what she says? I am puzzled, so please let us know what you find out.

I just emailed her to see if there could have been a mix-up, but she only had 6 breeds of chicks available at the time, and none of the others had feathered legs. (and none at all were banties)

I am sure about the hatch dates-- I hatched my SLWs (eggs from the same breeder) with my broody, and the day after they hatched I went and picked up the LBs and Dels as day-olds. Depending on what time of day they hatched, they could at most be almost 2 days younger. When I got them the 4 chicks were the same size, but now the Dels are much closer in size to the SLWs and are far more feathered out than my tiny LBs. I'll let you know what she thinks... I sent her a picture, and I know she'll be honest because we've been there several times and she gave us the grand tour, plus she was quick to replace the 4/12 eggs I got from her that weren't fertile.
