I wasn't really thinking about the 'new colors' but I'm sure there are some that meet, or with good breeding will soon meet, the standard. I was actually thinking about 'lights' and the undercolor in the lights. It seems (in my limited experience) that there are three undercolors in the lights. If we can't even decide what's 'right' concerning the proper color in lights (like the Buckeye people have) then where is this breed going?

Just our small local Caesar Creek swap, 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month. Brought some of the black phase youngsters out of the blue laced red pen who's pattern fell somewhere between partridge and double laced, with the black necks that look so much better in blue or splash, (at least to me). Good type but really kinda subdued looking, not much pop. Went with 10 pullets, 5 cockerels, and 2 kittens, came home with one cockerel. It was worth the set up fee just to get rid of the cats.

A teaspoon of unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar in a quart plastic waterer does seem to help. Pasty butt is common with shipped chicks and even with some weaker chicks who don't suffer from shipping stress.

Odd that you would refer to the standard. If you read it you will see that there is one accepted color of undercolor in lights; "light bluish slate". We don't have to decide what's "right". It is in the standard. In judging, undercolor is not to be considered so long as surface color is correct. Undercolor is typically a concern in the breeding pen. Getting hung up on undercolor and ignoring type is losing site of what a Brahma is. BTW a "yellow" Light chick is a good indication the adult will be undercolored. Conversely, a darker downed chick is an good indicator the adult bird will have good black markings.

BTW the breed is in good hands. The "right" color is laid out in the APA "Standard of Perfection" AND the ABA's "Bantam Standard". There are many good Brahma breeders(most) who have never even heard of "BYC".

Not sure which post office would cover that area, Wilmington maybe. It's a couple hundred yards, I guess north west, of I-71 and St Rt 73 off ramp.

Oh no, sorry to hear that. I can't believe out of 5 chicks I ended up with 5 pullets. And no one has even started laying yet.

I think when anyone chooses one or maybe two varieties to concentrate on, ...those varieties naturally improve. Lots of people new to Brahmas and even chickens for that matter.....decide a (fill in your own variety) "Brahma" would be SOOOOO PRETTY! They cross a Brahma on to a cochin or whatever breed has that variety. Hatch the first batch of eggs and sell them as " whatever Brahmas", Oh and did I mention they are "SUPER RARE"? The gullible snatch them up and continue the degredation, selling birds and eggs that are no more Brahma than a modern game is. Type is paramount. A bird has to have BRAHMA type to be a Brahma. Otherwise, its just a pretty bird.

Just darks here but thats all i want to work with i was given a reallt small light cockeral as a day old " Vulture hocks " and he seemed to come out of the hock issue but still small HMMMMM
i was also given a beautiful looks like buff dark cross .................. Egg pen but Darn she has the best Conformation of any of my girls pouts but is laying good tasty eggs . she is eye candy

I didn't have a proper Brooder for my chicks. My dad an I used an old wooden box took the bottom off and put chicken wire on the top. made a cover. We have been keeping them outside in the sunshine. They do have shade, food, and water in there. They seem fine so far. We will of course take them out and put them inside the house before it gets to cold.

The one who had pasty butt real bad seems to be recovering nicely. I gave them some hard boiled yolk like someone had suggested in the pasty butt thread on here. and switched to bottled water instead of the vitamin water. Thanks everyone for all the suggestions =D

Anyway, believe it or not I have studied the SOP and it’s what prompted my question/reflection in the first place. I don’t know who is ignoring type. I certainly don’t but this particular reflection was about color (undercolor) and how it was worded in the SOP. Thanks to you I now understand that the ONE undercolor excepted is the ‘light bluish slate’…..unless the topcolor is correct….then anything goes….got it.
I’m glad to know the breed is in ‘good hands’. I've been on the fence as to which way to go with breeding Brahmas. Now that I don’t have to worry about buying show birds in order to help with improvements I can spend my money on a color project instead.
