Hey ya'll - health question. I have about 24 Brahma's - lights and darks - half are about 4 months old and the other half is about 2 1/2 months old. All of them seem to be growing nicely, active, running around like ninny's, working on pecking order, eating good, drinking, etc and no visible ailments. I've noticed several of them making wheezing sounds breathing so I've been giving them electrolytes and vitamins in their water and cod liver oil supplement in their food for about 3 weeks now. They are all still healthy looking and eating well but still making the wheezing noise. I'm not sure if this is related to the heat or if they might have some type of respiratory problem. Any comments please?

I had a case like yours on the wheezing though. Mine was a White Rock, she done this for a month or so then one morning I found her dead. I think it was just heat related causing the heavy breathing.

Just going back to the perches bit.......NONE of my Brahmas roost, no matter what height or sort of perch I have offered them. They are heavy and a bit lazy, I suspect.Though they have acres to free range by day,they just choose to hang around the door waiting for food.

I've tried really low perches and thick perches, thin perches and any type of perch you may think of....they still form a multi-coloured heap on the floor. I've now given up.....my other chickens use the varying styles!

With just a couple exceptions, all my Brahmas roost. Which if I planned on showing I would not have encouraged.

I can't remember if I read this, or was told this by an old timer years ago, but large birds often do more damage to their leg joints jumping off low roosts than higher ones. The thinking was with higher roosts birds use their wings to slow their desent, with lower roosts they just hop down, without using their wings, recieving more shock to their leg joints. I use cleated walkway boards up to the roosts, not sure if it does any good, but many do use it.

As far as your birds not ranging, do you have any problems with predation ? I know with mine, if they start sticking closer to the coop, they are responding to a percieved threat, be it ground or avian.

a lot of young birds get the sniffes, pass it around and get over it or they die. Truthfully, I don't Medicare birds under a year old. Let them build their immunity. I wouldn't sell birds from your property if you have this issue, but it should clear up on its own.
