Sk8inChick(en),
The difference in feathering is slight, but the comb and wattles are very noticeable. As they age, the difference in the feathering will be more noticeable.

Really? You all are saying a five month old Light Brahma with no color at all in the saddle is a male. IF you are correct(I'm not convinced) it does not speak well for the state of hatchery "Brahmas". Five months is too old not to be showing color. Not even considering the lack of color, neither bird has saddle feathers that could even remotely be labled pointed? again....Really?

I've had a few roosters that did not show until six months. The only noticeable part was the comb. I'm not saying this is the case. It just looks to have a large comb for a hen and I was just describing what to look for in the future. I never said that there were noticeable saddle feathers.

Sk8inChick(en),
The comb, wattles, and feathers give it away. The feathers come down in a sword like shape for roosters. Hens feathers tend to be shorter and rounder at the ends.
I'm sorry. I must have misunderstood.

mama2my4, What a sweet picture of your son! Of my 25 chickens 11 are LF Buff Brahmas. They are easy to live with laid back birds.
Thanks!

We have had the 4 of r a week today and we are really enjoying them. So much so that I believe we will be adding the light ones soon!!

Okay, I understand now. :) Like I said, I'm definitely not an expert, but I'm eager to learn what I can about Brahmas, even if mine are just hatchery birds.

I see what you're talking about now. The main thing I noticed was the comb and wattles and I didn't see anything telltale in the feathers.
But now I understand what you meant; the pointy feathers may show up later if it is a roo.

Thanks! :)

hi all. i am new here, was doing a search about vulture hocks. i read up on the last few pages and if anyone has time - - can you tell me if vulture hocks are a problem for brahmas? as in, are they painful, do they cause limping, anything like that. i dont show, so i dont necessarily care about being DQ'd.
also, i was really hoping these guys were girls. but i am pretty sure they are in fact cockerels. they are both 5 months old. what do you think?

THANKS
