Broody hatch-a-long!!! With Pippin!

Well...I have a broody hen right now too! Have her 2 eggs yesterday. I also put 10 day old eggs under her (they were in the incubator, 5 eggs) so 7 in total. I will be taking the 5 older eggs from her on day 18 (probably day 17) and she will raise 2 chicks if all goes well. I will be candling the newer eggs in 2 days...hope all goes well! So far the 5 older eggs are all fertile (good job on my rooster’s part) I am really hoping Nugget (our rooster) will become a father before Father’s Day!!!

my only issue is that the nesting box is raised from the floor about 3 feet, so I will have to move her, probably in a weeks or so...EXCITED!!!

I think what someone did was to take the first hatched chick away so that the broody doesn't get distracted with the need to take care of the soon to be hungry baby.
take that with a grain of salt though, I've never done this before and am just parroting information

I'm not gonna take the baby from her. She looks so happy! I made her mushy bread with peas and corn and she is eating a lot, which gives me a chance to hold them!

Pippin is letting me hold her babies but if I hold them for too long she clucks and I put it back

Thank you everyone for supporting Pippin! It really helped Pippin and I stay positive for these 5 weeks. I will be staying on here to support all the other broodies who aren't on hatch-day yet and keep you updated on Basil, Clover and Darwin!

Nope. One of the chicks is still quite young and wet. Pippin is trying to hatch one of the eggs.
Do you think if I take the egg away she will get off the nest? I can put it in my incubator and if it hatches I can return the chick to her

I took the unhatched egg away and mama STILL stayed on the nest W no eggs left. But on day 3, she finally left the nest.
In a previous year, I hatched a late egg indoors and mama would not accept the baby. But lots of people report success doing this.

We have this dog kennel, I think I will move her there on day 18 for the 2 newer eggs. And just leave the kennel in the coop. I don’t know if she will like getting moved though...maybe at night.
