Cute little things. Thanks for streaming them. I hadn't seen the Brinsea brooder before. It's interesting how they squish themselves down under it just like they would a hen. Our feedstore seems stuck on selling the most standard birds they can find. That's great that your feedstore is stepping outside the box and ordering Buckeyes. Handy, too.

I very happy with the switch to the EcoGlo brooder and not needing the hot red lights. Once the peeps got the hang of it they have been darting in and out from under the brooder

Is it possible to sex Buckeye chicks while still little? The brooder at the store said pullets and the counter help said the hatchery says 90 % accurate. Just wondering if I really do have 6 pullets... I have so many roosters this year from the different breeds its not even funny ... just something else to deal with as the birds mature.

Thanks jen Is there any thing else i should look for in the near future? I would like to keep 1 or 2 for breeding. andalusn nice looking brooder set up. It beats my plastic storage box and heat lamp. John

Nope. It's the regular 6 week wait until the combs on the males start developing. Well, unless you can do vent sexing like the hatchery does. Fingers crossed for you.

John, the next thing that will become evident is that the hackles and saddles feathers of the roos will be pointier and the pullets' will be more rounded. And then the sickle feathers of the roos tails will start to become more noticeable.

and getting into chickens has started from wanting a few bug catchers that also laid eggs to now refining my tastes to particular breeds.. Does any one have a diagram of chicken parts with names and arrows? Is there one in the Dummies book? I am still searching the net and my bookshelf but most of my books on chickens are glossy pictures of pretty birds.

I will echo that with birds at about 12 weeks one can generally determine sex by the saddle feathers alone. Longer, pointier, glossier saddle feathers are cockerels. The ones with lighter, more uniform, wider, and rounded saddle feathers are pullets. It's almost foolproof by that time. Once you know how to look for it, it's easy to spot. If I get a chance I'll take some pics and post them.
