Buckeye Breed Thread

Hi Dave,
It's proven that Buckeyes grow better on higher protein feed, as they are a muscular bird. Oyster shells is good to boost calcium. Many people raise them on the 28% protein, then lower it at 8 weeks if I remember correctly. I started mine @ 22% game bird grower (wished I had done more, but it was recommended to me), now I have them on turkey grower which is also 22%. You could give them half layer and game bird, too.
Are you planning on breeding Buckeyes, or just some layers? That can effect what feed you choose.

I feed game bird starter to 8 weeks, then game bird grower to 4-6 months. I change to layer when egg laying starts as the pullets won't be growing so fast after that. I always have some cockerels I want to grow out a little more and I usually send them to a bachelor pad and continue them on game bird grower a little longer.

thanks for the info guys, trying to gather all the info i can before my birds arrive. wife says i'm spending way too much time on the computer, i told her it was better than a bar!!! lol. anyways, i plan on breeding.....for myself. i don't plan on doing any showing, except for maybe my kids in 4-H, but, out of personal satisfaction would like to keep the breed as true as possible and not screw up all the hard work that people have put energy and time in. i plan on breeding up to a flock of about 20 hens, keeping only the best for breeding next year, and eating the rest. since i only have about 1/3rd of an acre to dedicate to the chickens, i don't want to get too big, i have 2 tractors that i plan on raising the young in until they either make the cut or go to freezer camp. again, thanks for the info, i'm sure i'll have plenty more questions, since i'm very new to the breeding of chickens, or anything else that is!!! till then i'm just gonna keep on reading, searching, studying pictures, etc.
