Bugs & Problems With The New Platform

Okay I think I found the solution to the Kindle fire issue. I went to my profile on BYC, edit account details and changed the prefered editor to bb code editor...it works for both Redhen and me so it's worth a shot.

ETA: if this causes other problems I haven't found them yet so let us know

I loooooove welasharon... it worked for me! :weee

I'm trying to learn how to use this new system...but even at the very beginning of something called "how to use the new system" or something like that, it shows the forum page with arrows describing what some of the features are...well, on my computer I don't have some of that...under "forum" the illustration states if you hover, you can see a dropdown or else a bar of choices such as "new posts".."hot" "ive posted" .I don't have any of those things...in fact no bar or dropdown. Is that instructional illustration page obsolete already?

Also, I am reading and testing the info on how to search...found here:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/search-and-advanced-search-tutorial
and I am testing the search in title only option in advanced search. Well, that appears not to work right. I put in the words "chantecler" and "meat", and I got 213 PAGES of results, none of the titles containing the word "meat" so far. Of course, it is impossible to look at 213 pages of results! Before posting this, I tried to search in this very bugs thread to see if the problem had been discussed but was not able to find ANY results when I searched this thread for the keywords "title" and "search" so I believe this is a true bug in the system, a very big one!

Others have also mentioned being unable to find information because of being overwhelmed with results. If it is impossible to search BYC for relevant information, people are forced to simply post questions even if they have been usefully answered many times before.

Has anybody else been systematically trying to test the search functions of the new platform? If so, do you have helpful ideas or have you found bugs that need to be reported?

To the administrators, are any of you testing the search functions?

I'm really at quite a loss as to how to even start to learn to use the new site...Where do I go, especially when I can't search for things? Can anybody reply with some links to threads that have been especially helpful to them when learning how to use the new site? I did watch a very short video and looked at the forum "
BYC Website & Forum Feedback & Announcements"

and chose "navigating the new BYC 2012"

I've read most of that...however under FAQs of the new system, I tried to find out about "How do I find new posts & unread posts?" but it denies me access when I click to find the answer to that where it says to click "here". It brings up a screen that says "insufficient permissions" an odd bit of wording in itself!

I tried the search this thread for "member list" and it gave me 6 posts. I searched the site for "rabbits" and it gave me a lot of threads but rabbit was kind of general and i was able to get the most recent first.
I'm on an old (6+ years) desk top with latest firefox. What are you using ?

Quote: Hi there! I just now tried your search for member list in this thread and got 8. Most but not all were listed most recent first. That's a reasonable number, so searching within a thread may be pretty useful if you have found a thread that is relevant. But earlier, I was testing more generally to try to find useful threads in the first place, so basically searching using the "advanced search" button near the top of most (all?) pages when on BYC. I have not been able to figure out how to find relevant threads. I have not yet tested using the Boolean operators, so I'm going to try that next. ( I've been testing the advanced search features using Google Chrome since people recommended it because it runs faster than Firefox.)

When i tried the Chrome I could not get the "I've posted" part and the speed was the same as Firefox for me.

If I search:

"chantecler AND meat": 4 results (no titles as no title contains both words)
chanticler AND meat: 453 results
chantecler AND recipe: 121 results
chantecler AND meat AND chicken: 42 results
chantecler AND culling: 6 results

Quote: How interesting...thank you for testing on your computer. I'm baffled by the different results of your first 2 searches mentioned. Putting those 3 words in quotes I supposed brought up that actual phrase 4 times on the site. I will have to try that next and see if that's the case!

But it is interesting that when you tried as a title search, it must have told you that no titles contained both words, whereas when I tried as a title search, it appeared to simply have eliminated the word "meat" from my search and/or just ran it as a full post search rather than a title search.
