Bugs & Problems With The New Platform

I keep getting a Very annoying pop up which says that the certificate for this website is invalid and requests me to tap accept to go on the site any way. I have been hitting cancel, an average of twelve times each time it pops up. SUPER annoying.

Here are a few questions that will help us find, duplicate, and hopefully resolve the problem:

• What is the URL of the page that you got the error or had problems?
• How long has it been happening?
• Which browser and version are you using (eg., Firefox 3.5.9, Internet Explorer 7, etc.)
• Have you logged out, deleted your internet cache, logged back in, and tried again?
• Have you tried a different browser?
 
It's like a mechanic trying to find a problem with your car. Sometimes it's easy for a mechanic to find the problem... you drive your car in with a big hole in your radiator... pretty easy to diagnose and know what the fix needs to be.

Of course there are also the times where your car makes a loud knocking sound from the engine... except it stops when you take it into the shop.

The same applies to problems with websites, but imagine instead of one engine in your car to troubleshoot, you have 10! That's what it's like trying to fix problems with very large / robust websites... it's very complex and complicated. Is it a problem with the server, the database, the programming, the ads, the user's browser, the user's computer, other software on the user's computer, the internet connection, or one of the almost infinite combinations of all of the above? Is it happening to everyone all the time or some users once in a while and only under special circumstances?

Just like a mechanic, the #1 best way to get to a fix of a problem is to be able to reproduce it. The problem is that we often can't duplicate the problem. In the cases where we can, then it might be something that is a quick fix or something that takes a ton of investigation and fixing.
 
I did not read through the entire thread. 45 pages scheeesh. My problem is whenever I post on a thread, any thread, it automatically puts in a subscription. This doesn't happen all the time but a least often enough to be irritating. Especially if it is an active thread and my mail box has a dozen or more notifications and I know I didn't subscribe.

I checked your profile and you have "auto subscribe" and "opt to receive emails" checked. Go to your profile and change your settings. You can also change at least some of them in "my subscriptions."

Mine are set to "don't subscribe" and "site only." To subscribe to a topic, I have to click on "subscribe" below a thread. Unless I do this, even if I post, I don't get subscribed.

There are several options; this is simply my personal preference.

This could not be more TRUE! I've been an IT professional for 20+ years & I know exactly what you're going thru. I also appreciate your tenacity in sticking with trying to find resolutions to problems that may/may not exist. I myself have been thru system conversions that were planned for months, converting decades of data, millions of records & thousands of users. Wish I could say they went without a hitch. But, as with many things, over time & investment in additional resources things are operating smoothly. Took us a while to get there; almost a year, but we made it. Now, we wonder why we ever did things the "old" way. Hang in there. I appreciate your efforts & tireless customer service.
BTW: you've spent so much time in "helpdesk" mode, did you remember to feed your chickens?

I am pretty clueless about computers, like cars, one should just turn it on and it should run. I have the greatest respect for you dealing with this huge site, then redesigning it and getting it functional in such a short time. I decided to do the only thing I knew how to do, I logged out and made sure the remember me was not checked. Today has been fine. Thank you for all you do. Susan
 
WichitaKidd, thanks for your post. We definitely love to hear feedback from all our members, but it is especially interesting to get feedback from people who have experience managing technology and/or very large websites and/or very large communities. Feedback from these groups really helps us to validate (or make adjustments to) what we're doing and how we do it.

Rob, just a quick question about loss of formatting in posts, edited in bbcode, migrated from previous platform (example: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/295586/questions-about-de/10#post_3624296 ) primary problems being loss of quotes and links broken by being `extended' to include word(s) from the sentence that follows the link. Are these older posts being parsed (or originals stored elsewhere available to be subjected to a parser)? It seems the only formatting ported was plain text & CR/LF.

The reason I ask is that if they are what they are, I'll go back and reformat those I link to, occasionally. If not, I don't want to end up with more problems by adding additional formatting.

Wouldn't bother about this, but I couldn't run down a FAQ on the matter.
