This thread is for an open discussion on building a good columbian patterned bird. It does not matter what breed...rock, wyandotte or any of the breeds who have Columbian Pattern. Please share your thoughts, problems you are having, experiences, or knowledge in working with the columbian pattern,

I have Light Brahma's.
I too am intrested in the Columbian Pattern.
Not sure though how it works and what it works best with.

Yes, it does matter which breed you have. eWh Columbian are bred different than eb (brown) Columbian breeds. In eWh breeds, the down is white to the skin. It requires no color balancing in the underfluff to achieve correct top color. In eb based Columbian breeds, the underfluff has a hue to it and requires color balancing in the underfluff to get correct color in the top color.

Thanks Karen ... My comment about it does not matter which breed I was trying to do is get people who work with the columbian pattern to just talk and share. So many people think they can only talk about the Columbian Rock or Wyandotte or Light Sussex and all of the others that deal with the pattern. Just looking for people who really understand all of the eWH eb stuff to explain it and help other to understand it, and how to work with it. There is a lot to learn about the columbian pattern no matter what breed. It sounds like you have an excellent grasp on the genetics and that is great and could add and teach many of us about it.

Don ... thanks for joining in on the discussion. What breed of Columbians are you raising? Standard or Bantams? Is there much difference in working with the columbian pattern in standard or bantams or is it pretty much the same other than size of bird?

So do you raise standard columbian wyandottes or bantam? I have had mine for well over 30 years. APA judges Homer Endersby and Bill Ridgeway got me started back in 1980 and I have had them ever since.

Now that you are here what is the first thing you look for beside type in the columbian pattern? I have heard and practiced dark under color male to light undercolor females and the reverse. True false?

Any tricks to getting rid of ticking on the females? I can take some pictures and post them of what I am talking about. Right now the girls are all in snow and mud. Been in the 20's here for the high and yesterday and today we hit 38-40. Newk week back to the 20's for highs

I have several good articles from old magazines and a couple of letter from some of the old time breeders. May have to pull them out and put them on here for some discussions.

I definately will be asking questions. I'm mostly waiting for things to start laying right and maybe do a test breeding or two then I'll know what to ask.
