Wow, this got ugly.

I'll just answer the question. We put 3-5 birds in a 10 by 30 pen with 10 by 10 covered area. The pens are 8-10 feet tall. They thrive, have full crests, breed, show no feather loss or damage and the damnedest thing is that we can leave the pens open and they will come back every time.

I think this went wrong to language issues,I don't think anyone was trying to put anyone down.

Not everyone has the Money or the land to build the pen's that they want or are Ideal. I do think that most of the people here do try and even though there pens may not be ideal they are not abusing there Birds.

We need people to agree and disagree that is how we all learn.

I hear People talk about Deerman in the past term, did he leave the board or did something else happen?

I’m shocked, you all are discussing about sizes which are cruelty to animals. If you are not able to build bigger aviaries then you should give away your peafowl.

The absolute aviary minimum size for one pair is 20 x 30 feed. But whenever possible it should be 900 square feed. The aviary should be as min. 8 feed tall.

Unfortunately there are no rules for peafowl and too many people are keeping the birds in undersized aviaries. In your small aviaries they have no real space for running around and displaying.

They are animals who deserve to be housed properly.

I am trying to figure out a good way to cover a pen that size. I hesitate to use netting because it can be a problem with snow. Do you have any experience or ideas for this?

I wish I could let them loose, but apparently my neighbors feel the same way about confining their dogs. I lost a few birds last summer, but can't prove their dogs had anything to do with it. So until I figure a way to fence my entire property to keep peas in and dogs out (is that even possible?), they will have to stay penned up.

Yes, he was older. EVERYBODY knew him and he was VERY well -known for his pea and his knowledge. He was THE person that everyone went to for advice. Not sure what happened to his birds but there are A LOT of people on BYC that got birds from him. When you get a chance, type in his name and you will see the wealth of knowledge that he brought to the pea community here on BYC.

My turkeys can clear a 5 ft fence with clipped wings too.
