Those look like some nice sturdy boys, Bantambird. With all those light hairs and the high whites, I think JR is a sabino roan. I don't see any of the primitive dun characteristics (dorsal stripe, tiger stripes, shoulder bar, webbing) so I don't think he could be grulla, but he could be a sooty chestnut. Jazz is probably a sooty palomino. Sooty puts black back where red or agouti takes it out; some have a just a little, some a lot. My mare Latte is a sooty palomino; mostly you see it as dark roots in her mane and tail, but she has just enough on her legs and "the seat of the pants" to make it look like she's got dirt there even right after a bath.

My little corner of this soggy mess known as North Carolina is doing fairly well.
As soon as the ground water table gets lower then 1 inch in the back pens I will be in good shape.

The brood mare that was peanut's mother and Jazz and JR's grandmother was what my mom called a tiger stripe strawberry roan, if that makes any sense.

I'm pretty sure one of my chickens is broody

I didn't collect eggs for a day or two cause i went to a concert the other night and my dad doesnt go in there so last night i ddo, got 9 from under her, she was a good girl but did eventually move. She did look around the coop though and go back so she MAY have been laying, that was 6:30pm, (dark), i thought maybe time change. But the other 7 girls were all on the roof roosting so I find it weird she would be laying at that hour. And I have yet to see her this morning.

Oh dear...

But not to fear (no rhyme intended but that was pretty good LOL), I have class at 10:30am and it goes until 11:45am, maybe we'll get out early, I think we have a test, and I might get lunch, and then I'll come back and if she's still not out by then (since there's no way a chicken can take that long to lay), I will try luring her out by offering the others treats. Surely she can't resist that. If that doesn't work, I'll just pull her off.

Don't worry, not lookong for broody busting techniques or anything, I've read a lot of this website (thanks!), just a little funny story.

I had one think about it once but finally get off after a couple hours but this is the first more serious one. She turned around a few times too, either out of curiousity or because she wanted to bite me, as i was removing eggs LOL


Just checked (cause I thought I saw her off) and she's still there. Gaveme the stink eye. I tried telling her they're not going to hatchLOL

Ended up staying gone a lot longer than I thought cause I went to lunch, then to Petco and the Halloween store, then the grocery store and saw friends there, etc. And plus i was on my phone in between and i waste lots of time on the phone but I also just went lots of places each for a long time. Anyway, just got back at like 5:15 (it's 5:30 now) and Penny still is not out. I feel bad for not being home sooner because she's probably been there all day but oh well, it's comfy hah anyway, I believe my theory has been confirmed

Forgot to update but so the girls went to bed and Penny was still inside so I went and took her off the nest. It was still a little light out but getting dark fast and i had the deck light on. Anyway, I picked her up and she was really good about it and let me hold her and talk to her and didn't fight at all. So I then put her on the roof with the others and she stayed on the peak for a little bit then walked down the roof a bit to where she could see me taking her eggs and I could see her thinking then she flew off the front of the coop (front, not side or at me dont worry) and proceeded to pace around the run making soft chicken noises, not the usual loud clucks but very soft ones, she even went back into the coop looking for her eggs so I showed them to her and talked to her for a bit, and she talked back. Oh it was just heartbreaking. The poor thing was so upset that I took her eggs. Then she hopped out of the coop and ate a little so I just left the light on and figured I'd let her eat and drink a bit and then she'd go to bed with the others, right? WRONG. I go bacl out a couple hours later, after I realized I left the light on, and she had gone back to the nest! There weren't even any eggs on it!!! So I picked her up and put her with the others again and this time she stayed. I then went back inside quickly and shut the light off ASAP so she would stay. My thinking, or hope, is that because it was dark this time she will stay and hopefully by morning will FORGET about being broody. Also I am not going to leave eggs in there anymore, I am going back to collecting every single day and not being lazy some days. Heck, I might even have to start collecting the second they're laid! LOL but oh the poor thing was protesting with her little soft noises, broke my heart. I'm a big softie, can ya tell? I didn't get mad or anything though, obviously, I just tried to very gently and calmly explain to her over and over that I'm sorry Penny but you can't hatch them okay? We don't have a rooster, they won't hatch. You can sit there as long as you want, they won't watch, we don't have a rooster, etc. But she wasn't having it LOL I also told her that I wasn't buying her any fertilized eggs either because it was also winter and you're not gonna hatch any right before winter. Heck, I even told her that if she, or any of the others, go broody in the spring I'll buy some and let them hatch them then. Oi vey. Spoil these chickens I do

TL;DR (too long; didn't read for those who don't know)

is basically, I took her eggs away and put her on the roof, she flew off and paced around, making upset noises, then later went back to the nest. I put her back on the roof well after dark and hope she stays. Her soft protest noises broke my heart cause I'm a big softie and I promised her if she goes broody again in the spring I will let her hatch some then.
