I think she's going to be just fine, Debby! Thank you :) She's a stout little thing.

Hope you had a great day! Have to work tomorrow and off for the rest of the week. It's been crazy nice here, lately. Almost 50° again today. My dream of a brown Christmas really is coming true!
Try as I may I just can't imagine Bing Crosby singing about a brown Christmas. :)

Yes, I know, DL. It may sound ridiculous, but it well and truly is something she loves: to work. We'd never intentionally let something happen to her, that's our baby.
Of course not! The nature of both her and the cow resulted in the kick.

My very first Dobie, Amber, got kicked by my horse, Lucky. Thankfully, Lucky was barefoot and she hit Amber in the side of the neck, not her head. Amber was still flung back about 10 feet. She ran off yelping with her head twisted about 90 degrees. I about lost it right then and there. I managed to get her in the truck and raced her straight to the vet, appointment be damned. By the time I got her to the vet she had her "head on straight" so to speak. The vet did a cervical exam on her and looked in her ear. She said she had a hematoma in the ear but that seemed to be the extent of the damage.
6 years later, the true damage finally showed itself. Amber would be sleeping peacefully in the sun in front of my patio door then suddenly jerk awake and upright with one or the other front leg out stiff while she screamed. Similar to what was happening with Ben just before I had to let him go.
Amber was treated with a course of Prednisone and was never taken anywhere in anything but a harness. She had no more incidents of nerve impingement and muscle spasms after that one steroid treatment. She lived another 3 years before hepatitis took her.

Jeez, that's terrifying! But it ultimately was the cause of death?

That, to me, is the problem with "pets" and "livestock". Right or wrong, losing any livestock doesn't compare to losing a beloved pet. Chick will be upset and anxious that she can't go or help but it just isn't worth it. She had a leg out stiff for a bit after she got kicked. I hope that isn't the same that Amber had.

Did Ben have a hematoma? Or just similar nerve problems?

No, Amber ultimately died from hepatitis. After the steroid treatment and never putting a collar or head halter on her again, the damage Lucky did to her neck never bothered her again.
It was my hope that Ben would respond similarly to the steroid treatment when he showed symptoms of cervical issues. But his was from disc degeneration, not injury and the end result was devastating.

My apologies, I thought that was an auto correct. Glad that Amber didn't have lasting damage from Lucky. I do think of you and Ben often.

Chick is almost back to her normal self. They're will be no discussion in this household about whether or not she'll work cows again. If you can't tell, I was not a promoter, anyway. I loved to watch her work, but was a ball of anxiety about it. You can only luck out so many times before you're just stupid :p

Pert! How did you know that White Christmas was my absolute favorite Christmas movie?? That's too funny. :lau
But I'm sure you're right!
I know that the song White Christmas was in the movie Holiday Inn, I'm not sure I've seen the (sorta) similar themed White Christmas made 10 years later. Guess I'll have to watch that one now!

You've gotta watch it, it is the best! I'm not sure if it's considered a musical (I despise musicals :smack) but there is some lovely tunes in there :D I first watched it about 15yrs ago and couldn't believe my parents hadn't shown us that gem.
