BYC Café

Good afternoon everyone! Been a long and busy week and the fair and I admit, a bit relieved it's over. I see we have a few new members in the Cafe', so welcome all!
Is anyone watching the Olympics?  Yesterday I watched the Equestrian Cross Country - very impressive to me.

I haven't watched any yet, that sounds interesting to watch!

The course was 4 + miles, somewhere around 40 near impossible jumps, and they were supposed to average 21 mph through the course. Oldest human competitor was a 60 year old man from New Zealand. I believe that 3 horses/riders had clean finishes.

I love the gymnastics and swimming, but I think I'll have to watch a few equestrian competitions this year.

He would put me to shame I'm sure, even if I would jump My Caddy at her age anymore. Even when we were both alot younger, the highest I ever let her go was about 3.5 - 4 ft.
I found out that I didn't bounce very well and had trouble planning my smooth landing while I was mid-air between the saddle and whatever I was about hit like a sack of sh*t.

I watched some of it the last summer Olympics but forgot about it this year! We turned it on twice and watched whatever was on, swimming and gymnastics i think, but i completely forgot about equestrian!! I'm kind of upset I missed it LOL do you know when it's usually on? I want to watch it for sure. I love horses and that sort of thing. That course sounds very very draining for the poor horses though!! 21 mph!?!? Is that common though or very fast? Is that like galloping the whole way? And 4 miles and that many jumps and HIGH ones too, wow!!

Sour, would that have been the Cross-country phase of the 3-day Event? That's a tough, tough discipline, but it is gaining popularity. Eventing supposedly began as a way to demonstrate the extensive training on military mounts; it consists of dressage, cross-country, and stadium jumping. Cross country is impressive to watch, for sure - those jumps don't fall apart like the ones in the stadium do, and they are big and scary, so it takes a pretty brave horse to even tackle the course. I didn't see it; did a lot of the horses look white on the fronts of their legs? That's something like petroleum jelly; the idea is that if a horse hits a fence, that will help it slide off instead of sticking to it and possibly flipping over.
