:) It depends on who you ask. My brother & his family loved it ~ obviously. My mum, who visited, was way less enthusiastic. A lot of Asia is very dirty, including the oceans, beaches & waterways. Put her right off. :D

That makes total sense!!! So he permanently lived in Asia? Or did he move around?

They moved around different parts of Asia: Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, PNG, for 4~5 years. There was a loose flotilla of them because piracy is a big thing as well.

Sounds awesome!!! Why did they stop?? And wait what’s a flotilla? A group of boats?

Their oldest was due to start high school [grade 8 out here] & her mum didn't want to homeschool for High School. Yes, a flotilla is a group of boats. They sort of traveled together, kept in radio contact etc so if someone ran into trouble there was always someone who had their co~ordinates & was nearby to help.

That makes sense!! Where did they end up??? And ahh okay. That’s awesome!! Did anything ever happen!? Do you have any cool stories!? :D

lol I have lots of sailing stories ~ some scarily freaky. They ended up in Cairns ~ which is way, way up north & truly tropical but still live aboard. Their oldest had a bit of trouble adjusting to uni as she'd never really lived on land or in a house for any extended period.

I think the only real trouble they had was in the Louisiades [off PNG] while they waited on a weather window to get back into Australia. They had 3 goes before they made it & got robbed blind because by PNG standards they were filthy rich.

Of course they had the usual things: motor troubles & waiting in a dubious port for ages for parts to arrive from Australia, banking stuff~ups & @ least one expired passport which created havoc but my brother is fairly cautious & was extra so as his wife had never sailed before & his 2 kids were pretty tiny. As a sailor, & one who has raced small cats, I would never cross an ocean in a cat or a tri. Waaay too unstable though living conditions tend to be roomier. Plus my math is scarily non~existant. My brother does transports sailing other people's boats from port to port & if I remember correctly he's done one Sydney to Hobart for the heck of it. Like me he's sailed since he was tiny & has loads of experience.

I had a inland pilotage in Alaska living up in Alaska we chartered our boat out years ago land lubber now but have a fun with chickens did get 3 blue cochin the only ones left

Thanks for the stories!! That’s fascinating! My dad is big into sailing or used to be, sailed a lot when younger and a bit up here but we sold the sailboat a few years ago. My brothers also like sailing but not as big into it I don’t think. They all love the ocean and salt water though and love going out in the Whaler. We all took sailing lessons as kids and the boys and dad all love working on the boats but I’ve never really been into that. I’m much more of a freshwater person. Lakes, rivers, ponds, etc. and much more of a land lubber. Love mountains and forests. Stick me in the middle of a forest or some field/meadow and I’d be happy. :love hate beaches, sand, salt, anything to do with it LOL I’ll go out on the boat sometimes and it’s kind of fun when I’m out there but it’s not my first choice. The boys love the mountains and woods too but also have the ocean loving gene. I don’t think I got that one. :lau much more into hiking, kayaking, etc. I actually find sailing a bit boring. :hide

I get the boring. I raced dingys ~ fast, unstable, wired ~ & I was really, really underweight for the boats I loved & sailed so it was always exciting. Not into cruising @ all. Hate salt water, sand, sun ~ fiberglass!!! I like to hike & camp & have done heaps of that over the years. I always say I got the Scots crofting gene [a little of this, a little of that, not too much of anything ] rather than the nordic viking blood of the rest of my family. :lau The thought of being stuck on a boat for days on end with my family [much as I love them] makes me break out in hives!!!
