BYC Café

I assumed that this would be the case.
But what will happen on the next broody batch? When the next generation of cockerels are growing up, how will either Fabio or Captain know if the chick is theirs? I will likely be able to figure it at but how will they?
It's an interesting question. If you asked on the general forums people will likely tell you that chickens don't know who they are related to and it won't make any difference and you'll probably get laughed at for suggesting they might.
The studies I linked to and others in the various Uni libraries say different.
I don't know how far genetic recognition goes. I've had up to four generations alive at the same time and they all seem to know who is related to who and their position in the hierarchy.

Thanks guys! I think it'll be fun to change out the colors for different seasons or holidays.

Further, for those interested in both sex stable flocks I've suggested that a single breed works best starting with a pair (not necessarily related) as a starting point.
The mix and match practice from hatchery stock promoted here on BYC may well be fun but if you speak to serious chicken keepers where I live they are horrified by the way people build flocks on BYC.
If you just want meat and egg producers I suppose it doesn't matter. If you want a long term stable flock then it might.

Amen, Pert. I once accidentally walked through a nude beach. Most folks are better off with everything covered up.

"Accidentally"??? :gig

(But I believe you. I've lived through Fantasy Fest in Key West :sick You wanna know why local shopkeepers didn't like the event? The people that came to town for it didn't have any pockets to keep their money in!)
