BYC Café

Is anyone noticing a scarcity of birds? My redwing blackbird disappeared - don't even hear him anywhere. The mourning doves the same. The many sparrows that are usually all over the garage roof - gone. Even the one or two that looked in the kitchen window have disappeared. Only their poo poo remains.

The gold finches are AWOL, As are the cardinals we had all winter. Haven't seen the ONE robin that has been scratching around. We started March with many. I've thinking(hoping) they just moved back into the forrest preserves we have all around us.
They are spreading out to the now much less polluted areas since the lock down began.

no scarcity here, and some of the migrants are back. One particular song thrush has selected our roof as a good station and is trying his best to attract a mate; it's beautiful. Also the goldfinches are back, though I haven't seen the blue tits yet or heard a cuckoo. Our robins, wrens, dunnocks, starlings etc. are all busy building nests, and I'm waiting for one of my hens to take the hint and go broody!

My first time on the Cafe. Hello global poultry people!

Well we have had a record warm March and April is not much father behind. Still rainy, as usual. My daughter sighted a hawk in my yard yesterday. The old one must have died last year and a new one has come around.
hello @Hoping and Wishing ! welcome to the Cafe :frow

thanks Shad; morning all :frow

We are heading for the driest April on record... but I'm not sorry it's warm and sunny again today :)
It is like that here too but April is normally fairly dry here.

I do enjoy the nice weather in Spring.

Migrants are birds that migrate? It is a different thing here LOL!

We have had some species lost due to West Nile. Native Magpies are nearly gone and there are a lot less crows. Other bird species too.

Luckily chickens are mostly immune to West Nile

Thank you! Oh you have a wonderful array of birds.

@drumstick diva I noticed less smaller birds like the goldfinch last year. I did not plant sunflowers last year. Usually they feast on the seeds from my sorrel, but not last year.

I will try to put in a few sunflower seeds this year and see if that makes a difference.

There is a great covid parody on youtube."I need to know what day it is." (or something to that effect.) Hey I am old and hungry, and . Actually they have a long list of them and that's where I'll be headed when I'm finished here for a bit.
