Wife & I spend 3 days at the Heirloom Seed Festival In Santa Rosa Ca. this past week. Sat in on several good lectures on GMOs, raising rabbits & chickens. Several seed companies I purchase from were there; Bakers Creek (of course), High mowing seeds, Southern Exposure, Seed Savers plus a few others. We swung by Bakers Creek Seed Bank on the way home. Pretty impressive! All in all it was a pretty good time.

Awwww! Cuteness and a hard worker!
Mr Mkk, Thanks! Although I get get 2 or 3 crops of potatoes a year here, I generally don't cause it plays heck with crop rotation. I did grow a small patch of blues so we could harvest with the grandson. He lost interest when he found some worms & creepy crawlies. lol He is generally much more interested in the strawberries & blueberries. The seeds are sown however, I'm sure he'll get the gardening bug at some point. We grow sweet potatoes every year though, they're right behind the runner beans in the first set of pics. 2nd year Asparagus behind the youngun. Started a lot of plants yesterday for the fall/winter garden. That gives me a month to get the chickens moved, prep the beds, & plant. 30 days after that, the summer garden needs to be out & cover crops in.

A few weeks ago we amended the soil in one of the gardens and hubby built a barrel composter.

We stuffed the barrel full of scraps and shredded paper products.

We turn the barrel once a day for 2 weeks and so far its working wonderfully. 2 more weeks it should be done.

We seeded broccoli/lettuce/spinach/beets/carrots/rainbow chard/brussels sprouts & beans/peas all are doing really well so far at a couple inches lol

We fenced in the garden because wild rabbits and deer and a few other vermin thought it was their buffet! I have Neem on hand if needed. Fingers crossed it all makes it lol

Then last night I came home to the hubby building a hoop house for the chicks so they have more room :) yay!

yay!

Nice! Been trying to decide whether to make or buy a tumbler. I wanted a dual chamber job, if I put a divider in a 55 gallon drum it would be kinda small but I'm not sure if I have the room for two full barrels. Getting a little crowded out there. Decisions, decisions!

Moved chicken to new location. Prepped beds for fall garden.

Fall garden almost planted. In the next couple of weeks summer garden will come out & winter cover crops will go in.

Compost piles, Asparagus, strawberries, blueberries & some fruit trees that were planted early this spring.

I cut all my basil back yesterday. Going to make and freeze some basil butter and pesto. I planted wat too much this year for our family...even as often as we eat pasta. Drying lavender and oregano. Did not know chickens didn't like basil. threw a lot of it in the compost pile and they won't touch it, except to bury it scratching around for bugs and other tasty tidbits. They also don't like fruit loops.

I put basil and purple basil and rosemary and Vietnamese cilantro cuttings in the nest boxes, they tuck in pieces in a nest but don't eat it.
