I went upstairs to vent about there not being enough data on egg shell color for me to be confident I knew what I was talking about. I said to my husband Scientifically there is only supposed to be either Blue, white, or brown. So where in the world did the pink come from?

He quickly replied.

Don't you know they come from bunnies.

I nearly died laughing.

I'm wondering though, could it be possible that there is a genetic thing... I can't remember the correct word for it... where a chicken should have the color, but because of this other (allele?) it is preventing it from expressing itself? could it be that layer 1 is white like normal, layer 2 is brown, and layer 3 is white, where normally it would also be brown?

one last thing I would like to add before I actually go:

I just popped the 2 eggs in there as a reference they are both store bought eggs. a white, and a medium brown. the incubator eggs that are light brown, are from my sisters langshans, barred rocks, and cochins, I don't think Langshan eggs are "dark brown" the first picture is in incandescent lighting the second one with the flash on.

Not that I'm saying they couldn't be, just the only ones I've seen have been a light brown some have a pink outer layer on them some don't.
