"BYC MEMBERS" Babies are Hatched! 04/01/09 - Pic Heavy!

Not sure what's happening and who's what anymore. But 8 of the mixes are out, 1 green is struggling, 2 DBH are out, the remaining 4 are not even pipped. One died after pipping. Dang.

I think the humidity has been the issue. It has had wild swings, probably because we are in that time of year when there's no heat or AC running.

One of the DBH either has a damaged wing or somthing messy tightly glued to the wing. I am going to try warm water and a paper towel soon. I put 1 DBH in the brooder last night, and it was immediately attacked by a RIR. So back to the 'bator until I find a way to separate the brooder.

It's been a frustrating hatch, but it's not quite over yet!

Okay, okay, I have a six shooter complex.

It's a TX thang........

Now, back to hatching-

I have 12 bouncing babies, take THAT Nadya Suleman!!!

Only 2 are DBH, the rest are a wild bunch of drunken gorillas and I can't get them to stand still. Bec is going to have to do the final guess!

The 2 DBH are on the right, along with an EE and an Orp. All were helped out of their shells and look a bit rough right now. The gorillas are on the left.

Let's see- the original count was


12 DBH
2 RIR x Partridge Cochin
5 Orps x Partridge Cochin
3 Green Egg EE's x Partridge Cochin
2 Brown EE's x Partridge Cochin
1 Buff Bantam Cochin x Bantam G. Sebright (my own bunch)

3 DBH were clear
1 DBH scrambled
at 14 days

6 DBH were developed until about 15-16 days, and never pipped.

The RIR, and EE's all hatched. The Bantam hatched. The Orps were developed, to the point that I tried CPR on one of them. But no luck. Dang.

I didn't get any sleep to speak of, so I can't do the numbers right now. But I do have 12 beautiful chicks, and Bec, more DBH's, please- asap, woman!

I THINK the problem was wild fluctuations in the humidity. Some were stuck, and had to be helped out, while others were moist. None were drowned.

Overall, I am VERY happy, and would do it again- but the hatchery will have better climate control!

Oh yeah, that divider? The gorillas were tossing the new babes like frisbees, so I put a baking rack down the middle! Not making bread without my cooling rack........
