also sold at Frizelle Enos, which is where i'm usually shopping -- they have a crumble, but also a kind (i'm sorry, i don't know the name) that is more grain-y -- in the photo at the top of this webpage, it looks like the scoop on the right, might be their "layer all natural 16%"?

was just curious if anyone else has used them?

I have fed the Bar Ale layer feed to my flock in the past. It's a basic, traditional type, commercial chicken feed.

Bar Ale is a long time, established company that caters to traditional farmers and ranchers. Their feeds are balanced nutrition. Nothing really wrong with them or exceptional. My birds did fine when eating their feed. At that time, their prices were affordable, not over priced.
Personally, I don't like some of the additives in their feeds- like mineral oil, but that's my personal preference.
I noticed that they have added some new feeds, natural, soy free etc. These still have the mineral oil (petroleum product), so that's why I don't use them.
You can do as I did, click on the label information, research the ingredients, and decide if their feed is of interest.
They are a well respected company that has been around a long time, so I would trust that their feed is going to be a balanced source of nutrition.

Quote: I did some more checking today and I posted the wrong price yesterday for the Rogue feed. The Organic non soy is 24.5 for 40 #. The Cascade layer is 33.45 for 50 #s. When you calculate the price per pound, the Rogue feed is 5cents per pound less.

For my next order from Azure I am getting a Cascade non soy, non corn layer and a 50# bag of groats. If I get hungry, I can cook the groats for my self since it is also a people food....I could grind it into flour too.

The Groats are 25.35 for 50#s.

My Hens love the Cascade layer, hate Purina Omega 3 pellets, love Purina layeena, eat but do not love Kings natural non soy pellets and do not like the Modesto Mills non soy non corn. They do like the King Feed regular layer mash.

They also like wheat or Groats mixed with Ultra Kibble.

#9 most active thread for the past 7 days(NYD Hatch is happening)

The day started off with wind and rain for many of us. The Afternoon turned sunny, but there are predictions of freezing weather in the morning. Time to figure out how to keep the water thawed for the Chooks.

Cheryl had Chicks running out in the rain this morning. Liz shared a recipe for spinach gratin. I will take a break now and copy that recipe into my Drop Box folder(It is shareable too) Ok, it is in my drop box folder now. Cheryl will have hatching eggs available after January! Exciting! . Cheryl explained her program of having friends hatch eggs for her and then figure out which ones go back to her breeding program. Great opportunity there!

Laura and I had a discussion about ear lobe color and egg color. We are very excited because we both have CL x Pene chicks and can't wait to see the egg colors. We call them Amelia chickens in honor of Laura's cross.

Papa Brooder is looking for Silver Sussex chickens for a breeding project. Lucas has light Brahma Bantams to rehome, good luck! Zooweemama has an odd Show Girl Rooster that was causing a Rukus. After time out he is better today. Silly Boy

Amy, Pet Rock, Molly and others are happy to cook with their kids! That is a great thing to do.

We started a discussion about feeds. Azure Standard is going to start carrying a new feed or two. We are checking into ingredients and prices.

Good Day!

Azure Standard has Big Sky feed listed as a new feed. It comes in a 50# bag and they have 480 bags expected to arrive on Dec 31, 2012. The price is not there yet, but the ingredients look a lot like Cascade feeds layer.

Scratch and Peck is not on their website yet, so I do not see the price for it. Their ingredients look promising too:

This one uses vegetable oil instead of mineral oil.

When the price is posted for the Big Sky Layer, I will post it here. Looks like a lot of places are starting to carry these better feeds now. I love that there are now two more feeds with fish meal in them.

My ducks flat out rejected Purina Omega 3 feed. They refused to eat for 4 days. I had to go buy Flockraiser. I have them back on Mazuri waterfowl (which they love). $35 for a bag of feed. Eek! They do well on it though.

The chickens like the Layeena stuff, they eat the Omega 3 stuff...but slowly. We have some off brand at the store- Country something or other. Haven't tried it yet. Jones Feed here has Artois layer pellets and the chickens ate that fine. I have no idea what is in it and you cannot find the info anywhere that I could find.

Anyone else local to me that gets any other feeds that are non soy non corn? Where do you get it? I'd love to get some.
