Got a little more snow last night.



Plenty of space for coops and A work shop.
That looks so nice, I love your big trees! NOT loving the snow though! I am just below 2000 feet - and very grateful it rarely snows here. I keep going outside to work today on the chicken shelter I want to build - and coming back inside because my nose is frozen!
 
Talked to my folks outside of Redding last week. First storm dumped 20 inches, not sure of the elevation, I think it is about 4000.

We are at 800 and we got plenty.
I think we are moderated by the Ocean a bit more than Grants Pass is. The Storms come in from the Bay and move to the south east usually. The same type of process pulls cooler air up the valley in the summer, which is the moderated thing. We get colder in the winter when the north wind blows and then hotter in the summer when the North wind blows(it really does blow too...)

My Mom is at 4500 ft. and she is staying in Redding with my sister right now....
 
Kelly, I don't keep a light on in the coop. Ron is correct.... I do have more then 30 hens

I am finally going to try eating one of my own chickens...... I made it my 2012 New Years Resolution to eat one of my own chickens and with only two days left... its time.

I give all my roosters to my Rooster Guy. I usually give em up around 10-12 weeks and he grows them out on pasture and processes them around 6 months. Two months ago, he gave me a beautifully packaged frozen chickens, and made me promise that I would eat it. Well.. I am happy to say... it is soaking in a wine marinate in my fridge and I will be making Cog a Vin tomorrow. Looking forward to it. I will let you know how it goes.

One interesting note.... I did not have enough chicken for the recipe so I had to add a store bought pkg to supplement. I was impressed at how much lighter the store bought meat was compared to the free range chicken. Is that typical? From what I understand, my rooster guy barely feeds the roosters since they forage for most of their food. He also sets up Maggot Buckets from the trees for extra protein.

ah, but Deann hasn't given ALL of her roosters to the Rooster Guy -- because i'm going to pick up one of her swedish flower roos tomorrow afternoon. very excited! i don't have any SFH girls at the present, but he'll have plenty of other girls to make friends with, and perhaps i'll get him some swedish girlfriends eventually...

hoping my chicken-averse neighbor doesn't explode!

and will be very interested to know how the coq au vin goes, deann!
