It's just the two of them, so not a picking problem. Even the new feathers coming in are rough looking. Don't know my feather terminology enough to explain well. I'll take some pics when Cam gets back from fencing. I'm raising a pirate, you know!

You would have to worry more about predators there. I have to worry about Urban predators and I am more likely to have a person come steal my birds.

The Roos are large and very attentive. I think you would like them. Maybe try some this year and see?

Went out to take pictures of the birds today and look who was circling. The chickens all ran for cover.

Thinking back, boy that's dangerous, it was in late April when they went broody. I had 4 when I ordered the eggs. They hatched June 1st.

I put 14 eggs under Momma Rock and she covered them comfortably. She started looking at me funny with the 10th egg but continued to roll them under. She had been practicing with only 4 eggs.

A week at the most is considered best, turning them a few times a day. I set my own up to two weeks all the time with no problem.

I just had some eggs that had been sitting on the counter, no turning and they were close to 3 weeks old. I thought, what the heck, give them a chance. 18 out of 23 are developing.

Eggs are a lot more resilient than we give them credit for.

thanks to you both, very helpful!! now just have to keep my fingers crossed for broodiness...

no more chicks. will give the rest of the eggs through today. ohwell still have 20 chicks. I need to sell the mixes off though which will leave me with 12.
Im not trying to be an enabler here. But I know you are building your flocks up. Heres an auction for Pene eggs. IDK anything about the seller but thought you might want to take a look.

We have lots of hawks here. My Chickens dont seem to scared of them despite all of the attacks we've had.
Sometimes I sneak up on them and give them the "Hawk fir drill sound" HAAWWWW HAWWWWWW

Maybe i sound more like a crow to them....

Are you talking to me? I know Jason from Hangtown well. He has some really nice birds!! Don't worry, I plan to get some Penes from him soon.

I don't know... A pirate with a pillow? He fences foil; only the torso is targeted. You can hit anywhere with epee and it hurts!

Bruised pirates are not happy pirates.

Here is Donut. Unless he undergoes dramatic changes as he matures, I doubt that we will breed him. He's a keeper though, because Cam is quite attached to the silly little guy.

Maybe 'split' is the best way to describe his feathers. Semi-frizzled?
The shoulder feathers sometimes stick up straight.

What do you think is going on?

Awkward stage? Not enough preening?

He also has a crooked comb.

Boy, I sure know to to pick 'em!

You gotta love that face, though!

Hi guys!! Who knows quail? Coturnix quail. Apparently I have cinnamon & jumbo, but I don't know who's who as far as boys- except for the jumbos- I know them. I just got them 3 days ago, but no eggs yet. I equate it with settling after being rehomed... The breeder told me they just started laying. I thought I had it down yesterday! I knew which ones were boys, but today the ones that I thought were girls are mounting other "girls"...uugghh... another thing- it IS breading season, right? The one jumbo boy is pretty aggressive, but I read not to take it out if it's the season.... Please message me if you can help!! :) Thanks.
If its one boy and he is still aggressive take him out for a day put him back and watch.quails can be hard to introduce. Also they want 13 he's of daylight to lay so you are not likely to get eggs atm without lights. Any time with 13 hours of light is the season they will lay at any time.
