California - Northern

Where in Northern CA are you? I'm near Auburn and keep bees as well. (well, trying to - lost my hive last winter and had to start over)
Chicken mating is soooooooo NOT romantic. Unless he's drawing blood, it's not generally too rough. They have to hold them down to balance. Young cockerels take quite a bit of practice to get it right.
Golly, I did type that didn't I? I meant light, buff and dark. Sheesh, not enough coffee this morning I guess.
Yes that is what i ordered Light, Buff, and Dark only thing is I don't know which are what. I am guessing the brown ones are Buff and teh whitish ones are Light But which ones are the Dark ones?

welcome to the new folks.

we had a pretty neat Thunderstorm last night. Of course my dog was freaking out the whole time so I was up too.
I think it was east of us some as I did not hear it rain. it was dry this morning but you could smell the rain in the air

Our dark bantams were a dark gray with lighter gray down on the wings and head. Buff have red/orange heads. Ideal and Mcmurry have images of chicks on their websites thatmight help also. Great breed choice, I think brahmas are great mellow birds, mine remind me of ducks with their deep voices when they chatter at me. They get hot up here but don't seem to be overly sensitive.

Quote: Yummy. I was looking for a good recipe for that just a couple days ago. How did it turn out?

i make it ALL THE TIME, pretty much any time i have homemade chicken stock -- it's one of my favorite foods. very easy to make, & good hot or cold...

It was AMAZING ! At 10 pm thunder and lightning started rolling in . The skies OPENED up like I have not seen in about 6-7 years. We had to shout to be heard "oohing and aweing" over the light show. breathtaking and intense can not cover it,standing there watching the lightning strikes surrounding our house .one hit our power pole out front , the entire house lit up and we all had to cover our eyes and poof the power was out and our hair was full of static!

I wonder what the hens thought?!? It's an adrenaline rush to feel your surroundings shake under the power of a storm!

So... Yes... We had a little weather.;-)

I love thunder and lightening storms. We where down looking at properties when a great one rolled over Grants Pass. Probably 45 minutes of non-stop flashes and constant rumbling. It probably helped us deside to buy here rather than the other areas we were looking in.

Our house in San Diego had a flat roof. It used to scare our neighbors when we would sit on the roof in lawn chairs and watch the storms. They didn't know what they were missing!

Hi guys!

Shark: next year I am am adding more silver to my flock. I somehow ended up with a lot of brown and gold, and Dark Brahmas are on my not so short list. It sounds like you have some lovely babies.

The new babies were free ranging with mommy yesterday as 4 day olds. We have a hedge that all the chickens hang out under and Beakface brought her brood out. I now think I have three girls and a boy based on re-examining their wing feathers as three day olds.

We are doing the rooster shuffle around here when we get Curly's coop built. He will get the new chicks as pals when they turn 6 weeks old. We are moving my uncle's NH boy in with my young coop where he has been hanging out.

Funny story: I had a missing hen last night. My sweet Red Star Boom-Boom was not in the coop at bed time. I looked around but no feathers, we had all been outside so would have heard something if a raccoon or opossum got her. I figured she had wandered away and was too far from the coop at dusk so hopped up on a low branch though she has never done that before.

Well DH and I and our daughters went up to watch some Breaking Bad and I was still pretty fussed. 5 minutes in D2 says "hey dad pause the TV." she got up wen around behind it and came out with Boom-Boom.

My son had left the back door open when he had gone to work. She had walked in the open door and gone up stairs and no one had seen her do it.

This is what comes of encouraging your chickens to come into the house :-)

Taking my son to CSM today for orientation and to schedule classes. He has been planning to attend a dive program in FL but is now looking at costs a little more closely so may be staying closer to home. He would be living with my SIL in Hillsborough. It would be a good thing. :)

Hi all the new people and welcome back Papa Brooder. Your name has been thrown around here a few times in your absence. I was wondering how everyone knew you. Now I know. You were a regular here it seems. Funny they sll seem to run away like it is the most unpleasant thing ever. Lol Yummy. I was looking for a good recipe for that just a couple days ago. How did it turn out? Gosh I wanna start those quail. But I could possibly be moving. So I have to wait. I should know in a few weeks for sure. I hate being in limbo!
Not to be pushy but eggs in an incubator can be moved and unless its an apartment with a strict no pets issue quail are fine! But they are not going away either so there is no rush. Hopefully there is less mayheam today yesterday they all hated each other since I moved them and it was blue Kote everywhere as the new covys sorted things out. No eggs either!
The sunset in Rough & Ready, CA tonight.

Oops missed part of my multi quote.

Do you live in rough and ready?? I lived there for 2 years as a girl one of my fantasy places to move back to. Does it get real internet yet?
