Is there a thread on shipping chicks? Do we Californians have to have a live animal shipping permit? Someone was admiring one of my roo's. They are out of state and I thought I should learn about shipping the birds so I have more selling options. Hate for ALL the culled cockerels to end up in the pot. Some are quite nice!

I thought you have to be NPIP certified to ship out of state. Not sure, but that’s what I thought I read. I know what you mean though, when you have a nice specimen, I hate to see them as dinner.

My understanding is that some states have an NPIP requirement to receive chicks. To my knowledge we do not have that requirement for shipping out. I will have to research this!

Some States require NPIP for shipping the chickens. I do not think they require it for receiving the chickens.

Day old chicks have different requirements than ones older than three days. Boxes have to have filters and etc.

hi, I just went through this process. you have to have a live bird approved shipping box. you also have to call your po and make sure they accept live bird shipments and get the number to their headquarters. you need to call that headquarters main office at least 24 hours in advance and make an appointment for your chickens. (so they have room on the plane) then they give you a number you bring with you to the post office and they use it on the box as your reservation number.

and you dont have to be npip, only a few states require it to receive birds. and the box website i used is horizon.com

I like this picture and am impressed that the chickens did not eat the peppers....
