California - Northern

Ok. So I'm driving to see "happy Chooks" before the month is out. Since our baby will be here in May this will be one of my last trips off the mountain. If anyone is along the way with available chicks or eggs is love to know...

I was going to ask how to handle a chick that comes out 2 days ahead of the others in regards to food and water during lock down? But now let me rephrase my question since he's out and hopping around and several of the Splash x Blue Marans are piping. And 4 of the Splash x EE and coming also. And fast!
So what did I do wrong or right to make them hatch early?

They like to hatch at night! I hatch in the closet in the bedroom. It is quite noisy on hatch day.

I am excited for you!

I keep my incubator in "The Bird Room" across the hall from my bedroom. I would be up checking on them all night if they were any closer and I have enough problems sleeping!

What day and time did you set them?

I'm in Paradise so not quite as far north or west, but certainly far enough away not to be competition. And like Ron said, people in Arizona would be closer than me
you are just a bit over two hours North of me. The lady who sold the eggs might need a geography lesson but hopefully the eggs will arrive safe and sound and you will have a good hatch. Because like I said...I know someone with a weakness for mottled and a desire for Ameraucanas

20 and a half days and the Cream Legbar x RIR chick is peeping out. Is this a little early?
Congrats farmhand well done so far!

I candled the fiive eggs...2 lf mutt 2 bantam mutt and a Del or red star all have something going on. My aunt is tickled. Hope they all hatch.

Was it a mistake to put both bantam and lf eggs under her? should I stick the bantams in the LG for hatching?

The site shows the varieties as Black Copper, Blue Copper, Wheaten, Blue Wheaten, White, Black, Cuckoo, Blue, Birchen, Black Tailed Buff, Splash, Ermine and Duckwing, with only the Black Copper, Black, Wheaten and the white having an approved SOP so far. Some of the others have SOP pending approval and others the SOP is still in progress. Does "In progress" mean they are a project?

I am SO new to all this, but i think "in progress" means a bunch of breeders are working on getting those colors/types to something that is reproducible with enough regularity and predictability to call it an actual established color/breed strain -- whereas a "project" is a smaller number of breeders, or maybe only one, trying to produce a single line of a color/type.

I think i remember Walt aka @fowlman01 saying in another thread that the marans breeders had a "trial" (i'm not sure what to call it?) at a recent poultry show to test whether one of the marans colors (it might have been white? or cuckoo? can't remember) was ready for an SOP -- but said there was still so much variability that they have more work to do.

in other words, an SOP can't be established until there's a critical mass of birds that might conceivably meet it, over several generations of breeding, rather than just luck of getting a "right" bird here and there. and so the colors without SOPs are still just too variable to describe in such a formal way as an SOP.

someone who knows more about showing and standards PLEASE correct me where i'm wrong! just trying to piece this stuff together in my own head still... ?

It's official! I have a chick! :)
400

The one that hatched is the one who pipped this am.

I think the one who pipped 24 hours ago may be needed help :/ it zipped a tiny bit of the way but hasn't mad any more progress.....

My humidity was probably too low until this afternoon. :( I got it up to 70 now.
